Abstract: Embodiments of the present invention include composite compositions extrusion compounded together comprising a polymer, an amount of nanotubes, and an amount of finely milled carbon fiber having an aspect ratio greater than 1 and less than about 5. The resulting composite materials allow for high carbon loading levels with improved tribological properties including coefficient of friction and wear rates, provides uniform surface resistance with minimal processing sensitivity, retains rheological properties similar to the base resin, and provides isotropic shrink and a reduced coefficient of thermal expansion leading to minimal warp. In general, various articles can be formed that take advantage of the properties of the composite materials incorporating a polymer, carbon nanotubes and finely milled carbon fiber.

Abstract: Hydrophilic adhesive compositions are disclosed that contain a surfactant that is miscible, but not fully soluble in the polymer matrix of the adhesive. This permits the surfactant to continuously replenish at the surface of the adhesive as other surfactant is removed, such as when it is carried away by an aqueous sample flowing over that surface in an in-vitro diagnostic device, resulting in adhesive compositions that are inherently hydrophilic on their surfaces and do not rely on the bloom mechanism of known hydrophilic adhesives. This provides greater design options for in-vitro diagnostic device manufacturers, including the use of hydrophilic adhesive spacers in lieu of or in combination with hydrophilic top covers.

The vapor-deposited hard coating layer has a lower layer (Ti compound layer) and an upper layer (?-type Al2O3 layer). Thirty to 70% of Al2O3 crystal grains directly above the lower layer are oriented to (11-20) plane. Forty-five % or more of all of the Al2O3 crystal grains are oriented to (0001) plane. Preferably, the outermost surface layer of the lower layer is an oxygen-containing TiCN layer having oxygen content of 0.5 to 3 atomic % only within the depth region of 500 nm n. The ratio of the number of Al2O3 crystal grains directly above the outermost surface layer to the number of crystal grains of the Ti carbonitride layer in the outermost surface layer is 0.01 to 0.5 in the interface.

Abstract: The present invention relates to a monolayer film comprising a mixture of a first linear polyethylene having a density in the range of from 0.926 to 0.970 g/cm3; a second LLDPE having a density in the range of from 0.868 to 0.920 g/cm3; and a nucleating agent to get to a better balance of low WVTR and dart while still allowing film production from it on standard monolayer equipment without need for co-extrusion capability. The LLDPE with the higher density is further characterized by having at least 57 percent (by weight of that component) of molecules having a weight average molecular weight in the range of 31,000 g/mole to 1,000,000 g/mole. These components are blended in various ratios ranging from 50 to 90% of the higher density LLDPE, 10 to 50% of the lower density LLDPE and at least 50 ppm of the nucleating agent.
