Abstract: A method for forming a bag with a carrying handle from a continuous web of flexible material is described. The handle has an inactivated position, in which it extends substantially in a cross machine direction of the web, and an activated or in-use position, substantially perpendicular to the inactivated position. The method permits attachment of the handles to the web before the bag is formed, without a risk of inadvertently cutting the handle. The activated position of the handle provides optimum force distribution among the materials of the bag, thus minimizing or eliminating the need for using reinforcement materials.

Abstract: A non-reciprocal device incorporating metamaterials which exhibit non-reciprocity through angular momentum biasing. The metamaterial, such as a ring resonator, is angular-momentum biased. This is achieved by applying a suitable mechanical or spatio-temporal modulation to resonant inclusions of the metamaterial, thereby producing strong non-reciprocity. In this manner, non-reciprocity can be produced without requiring the use of large and bulky magnets to produce a static magnetic field. The metamaterials of the present invention can be realized by semiconducting and/or metallic materials which are widely used in integrated circuit technology, and therefore, contrary to magneto-optical materials, can be easily integrated into the non-reciprocal devices and large microwave or optical systems. The metamaterials of the present invention can be compact at various frequencies due to the enhanced wave-matter interaction in the constituent resonant inclusions.

The heating resistor is made of resistive material with a temperature coefficient of 1500±150 ppm/° C. The resistance of the heating resistor is distributed in a way that, the resistance at two ends is larger than that at a center, and the resistance is reduced gradually or by step, from two ends to the center.

Abstract: A fiber optic ribbon includes optical fibers, each including a core surrounded by cladding, and edge bonding rigidly connecting the optical fibers to one. The ribbon further includes a stress-isolation layer surrounding the optical fibers and edge bonding, and a hardened shell surrounding the stress-isolation layer. The edge bonding mitigates independent movement of the optical fibers relative to one another within the stress-isolation layer. At 25° Celsius and at sea level, the Young's modulus of elasticity of the hardened shell is, on average, at least twice that of the stress-isolation layer.

Abstract: Light guiding structures are provided to improve the light coupling between photonic active devices and the top of a metallization layer stack interconnecting these photonic active devices. Each light guiding structure comprises a hole extending between the near surface of the photonic active devices and the top surface of the metallization layer stack, said hole being filled with dielectrics or a combination of dielectrics and metals. Such a light guiding structure removes from the optical path of light rays, the interfaces between the metallization layers, thereby confining light laterally and enabling interconnects with increased thickness and more levels of metal. This results in the suppression of multiple reflections and optical crosstalk. The light guiding structures can have cross-section diagonals with sub-wavelength dimensions can be fabricated after all CMOS process steps, thus having minimal interference and maximal compatibility with CMOS processing.
