Abstract: A method for verifying reliable operation of a fuel tank pressure transducer coupled to a fuel tank of a PHEV. The method monitors pressure and fuel level within the fuel tank, employing a fuel level sensor providing fuel level signals to a controller, as well as a pressure transducer providing pressure signals to the controller. The system identifies a sloshing event, as indicated by high amplitude, rapidly fluctuating fuel level signals, and it then analyzes the vapor dome pressure signals to determine whether vapor dome pressure signals respond to the sloshing event. Reliable operation of the fuel tank pressure transducer is indicated upon a determination that the vapor dome pressure signals appropriately respond to the sloshing event.

Abstract: A sensing apparatus for detecting fluid quality change using signals obtained from a fluid quality sensor for exposure to a fluid and a reference sensor positioned in a reference sensing means having a fluid trap section holding a part of the fluid. Sensing values obtained from the fluid quality sensor and the reference sensor are compared in determining an aging factor. An application of the sensing apparatus is an apparatus for detecting engine oil quality change in an engine system. With the sensing apparatus, a first aging factor can be calculated after an engine cold soak and a second one can be obtained during engine operation. With these two aging factors, in addition to oil quality change, failures in the engine system and sensors, and oil change events can also be detected. Additionally, since reference sensing values are provided by the reference sensor, power disconnections have least effects.

Abstract: An environmental testing and monitoring system uses a sampler to hold resin or other adsorbent for contaminants, pollutants, nutrients, or other chemicals uptake from water or air, and preferably includes remote real-time sensors that detect and transmit physical and/or chemical data by wireless or wired telemetry and GPS systems. The sampler and/or sensors may be attached to a ground-insertion tool having at least one screw portion. The sampler and sensors may be attached to a fixed or floating buoy system that is capable of solar charging or may be affixed to other supports to allow precise placement in, and easy retrieval from, various structures and environments including fresh and saltwater, soil and sediment, water and sludge pipes and vessels, air, and gaseous streams and emissions.

Abstract: The present invention relates to a device and an arrangement for selective solvent evaporation from a liquid feed, the feed comprising one or more components diluted in at least a first solvent or a solvent blend, comprising: a) a first tubular vessel having a distal end or a channel suitable for the formation of a droplet of a first volume, at an inflow rate n, at the tip or in the lumen of the tubular vessel, and b) means for subjecting the droplet to a solvent removal step at an evaporation rate r2 to evaporate at least part of the first solvent or solvent blend, to accumulate the components in the feed in the droplet during the evaporation process at an accumulation rate r3, to obtain a concentrated feed volume in a concentrated droplet, wherein the evaporation and/or inflow rates are continuously adjusted to achieve a desired accumulation rate. The invention further relates to a method for selective solvent removal from an analyte mixture obtained in a chromatographic separation process.

Abstract: The invention generally provides devices and methods for sampling, detecting and/or characterizing particles, for example, via collection, growth and analysis of viable biological particles such as microorganisms. Devices and methods of the invention include particle samplers and impactors for collecting and/or analyzing biological particles in manufacturing environments requiring low levels of particles, such as cleanroom environments for electronics manufacturing and aseptic environments for manufacturing pharmaceutical and biological products, such as sterile medicinal products. Devices and methods of the invention incorporate an integrated sampler and impact surface, such as the receiving surface of a growth media, in a manner to minimize, or entirely eliminate, risks associated with user handling, such as the occurrence of false positive determinations due to contamination of the impact surface during particle sampling, growth or analysis processes.

Abstract: A fluid flow sampling device comprises a housing and a sleeve disposed in the housing having openings corresponding to an inlet and an outlet of the housing. The sleeve is movable relative to the housing to an open position and a closed position. The open position aligns the openings of the sleeve with the inlet and the outlet to allow fluid to flow into the inlet, through the sleeve, and out of the outlet. The closed position blocks the inlet and/or the outlet with a portion of the sleeve such that fluid is prevented from flowing through the sleeve. A coalescent filter is disposed in the sleeve between the inlet and the outlet to allow some fluid to pass through the filter for sampling and to allow another portion of fluid to flow past the filter and out of the outlet to carry away coalescent material on the filter. Additionally, a sample outlet port facilitates removal of fluid from the sampling device for sampling.

Abstract: This invention can be embodied in smart clothing for recognizing full-body human motion based on the pressure levels of a flowable substance within two different sets of flexible tubes or channels which are integrated into clothing (or a wearable accessory) and which span the same body joint. This technology can be used to create a wearable, mobile, reasonably-priced, and relatively-unobtrusive full-body motion-capture system which can be used in diverse environments. Compared to camera-based motion capture systems, this invention can be mobile and does not suffer from optical occlusion.

Abstract: A hand-operating starting device with clutch structure is mounted to one side of an engine and includes a driving portion and a driven portion. The driving portion includes a housing. A rotary member that is received in the housing and has a pull cord wounded thereon is provided with an elastic member and an axle having a positioning pin projecting therefrom. The driven portion includes a cover that covers the housing. The cover receives therein a sleeve for driving the engine. The sleeve includes a helical channel and is fit over the axle with the positioning pin received in and guided by the helical channel. After the engine has been started up, a main shaft of the engine is no longer coupled to and thus impeded by the starting structure so as to avoid loss of power. And, no additional power consumption is needed for powering an electric starting device.

Abstract: A method of eliminating a tooth-on-tooth position at an interlocking shifting element. The tooth-on-tooth position is eliminated by operating at least one actuator such that, during a first operating attempt the actuator is operated using a defined target parameter, after which it is checked whether as a result of the operation of the actuator the tooth-on-tooth position has been eliminated. If the tooth-on-tooth position is not eliminated, then repeating subsequent operating attempts of operation of the actuator, each time with an increased target parameter, until, after the corresponding operation of the actuator, the tooth-on-tooth position is eliminated by the m-th operating attempt. For elimination of a subsequent tooth-on-tooth position, the target parameter defined for the first elimination attempt is adapted such that the subsequent tooth-on-tooth position is eliminated by an n-th attempt.
