  • Patent number: 9233450
Abstract: A method of controlling polishing includes polishing a metal layer of a substrate. The metal layer overlies an underlying layer structure. During polishing of the metal layer, a light beam is directed onto the first substrate. The metal layer is sufficiently thin that a portion of the light beam reflects from an exposed surface of the metal layer and a portion of the light beam passes through the metal layer and reflects from the underlying layer structure to generate a reflected light beam. The reflected light beam is monitored during polishing and a sequence of measured spectra is generated from the reflected light beam. At least one of a polishing endpoint or an adjustment for a polishing rate is determined from the sequence of measured spectra.

  • Patent number: 9233452
Abstract: Hard-material, flat-surfaced workpieces such as semiconductor wafers or sapphire disks are attached with vacuum to the flexible elastomeric membrane of a wafer carrier that allows one surface of the workpiece to be in conformal abrading contact with a moving flat-surfaced abrasive. The elastomeric membrane external wafer attachment surface has a pattern of recessed vacuum grooves and vacuum is supplied to the grooves to firmly attach the rigid-material silicon wafer in flat-surfaced contact with the membrane. The attached wafer seals the vacuum grooves and also provides lateral stiffness to the center portion of the membrane. An outer annular extension of the flexible elastomer membrane maintains the wafer at its original membrane-centered location when abrading forces are applied to the rotating wafer. The rotating wafer peripheral edge does not contact a rigid retaining ring during a wafer polishing procedure.

  • Patent number: 9233481
Abstract: A method of patterning an electrically-conductive film is performed by providing a flexible substrate that carries the electrically-conductive film thereon to form a combined layer. The combined layer is then bent about a radius of curvature, so as to impart a stress on the brittle conductive film along the axis of curvature of the curved surface. The application of the stress to the conductive film results in the formation of crack lines that are substantially perpendicular to the direction to which the substrate and conductive film are bent. The crack lines serve to define and electrically isolate conductive sections therebetween that can be utilized as electrodes and address lines in electronic devices.
