Publication number: 20160030939Abstract: A sample preparation cartridge is described having a lower portion having four integrally-formed leaf springs, and a raised lower base part which is slightly below the level of the leaf springs. An upper portion of the cartridge engages with the lower portion, via four paired pins and holes formed in the lower and upper portions. The upper portion includes three well-shaped openings formed in the central region of the upper portion. Between the upper and lower portions is placed a sheet of sample preparation paper, resting on the leaf springs, which raise the lower face of the paper away from the raised lower base part, leaving a small air gap between the base and the paper. The upper face of the paper is in contact with the well-shaped openings of the upper portion. The user loads a liquid sample into the openings, and the paper wicks the liquid sample away from the loading location, leaving cellular debris in the place of application.Type: ApplicationFiled: February 11, 2014Publication date: February 4, 2016Inventor: Benjamin Cobb

Publication number: 20160030981Abstract: Microspheres are sorted by resonant light pressure effects. An evanescent optical field is generated when light is confined within the interior of an optical element such as a surface waveguide, a tapered microfiber, or a prism. Microspheres brought within vicinity of the surface are subjected to forces that result from a coupling of the evanescent field to whispering gallery modes (WGM) in the microspheres. Alternatively, a focused laser beam is directed close to the edge of the microspheres to exert resonant optical forces on microspheres. Alternatively, standing optical waves are excited in the optical element. Optical forces are resonantly enhanced when light frequencies match WGM frequencies in the microspheres. Those microspheres for which resonance is obtained are more affected by the evanescent field than microspheres for which resonance does not occur. Greater forces are applied to resonating microspheres, which are separated from a heterogeneous mixture according to size.Type: ApplicationFiled: September 18, 2015Publication date: February 4, 2016Applicant: THE UNIVERSITY OF NORTH CAROLINA AT CHARLOTTEInventor: VASILY N. Publication number: 20160030982Abstract: The invention generally relates to a novel method of sorting seed by providing a first seed population with a fluorescent indicator and a second seed population visually identical to the first seed population under standard operating conditions. The seed populations are combined to provide a combined seed population. A lamp having an output corresponding to the activation wavelength of the fluorescent indicator and a color sorting system are paired to count or separate the seed populations, as desired.Type: ApplicationFiled: July 2, 2015Publication date: February 4, 2016Inventors: Gregory K. Publication number: 20160030984Abstract: A cleaning shuttle is conveyed through a channel by magnetic attraction to a conveyance device that is slidably positioned outside the channel. The conveyance device pulls the cleaning shuttle through the channel by magnetic attraction between the conveyance device and the cleaning shuttle. The cleaning shuttle inside the channel, and the conveyance device positioned outside the channel, have significant magnetic attraction for each other, so that the cleaning shuttle is pulled through the channel by conveyance device without becoming lodged or stuck in the channel.Type: ApplicationFiled: July 29, 2015Publication date: February 4, 2016Inventors: Robert Rife, Roger Rife
