The machine tool includes: a tool spindle having an air supply portion, for rotating the rotating tool; a lower tool rest for mounting a plurality of fixed tools thereon; a tool holder having a tapered surface restraining a tool, and attached to the lower tool rest, for detachably holding the tool; an automatic tool changer; and a special tool mounted on the tool spindle, into which the air is introduced from the air supply portion. When the tool is automatically changed by the automatic tool changer, the special tool mounted on the tool spindle is coupled to the tool holder, and the air from the air supply portion is supplied to the tapered surface through the special tool.

Abstract: In accordance with one aspect, a vertical machine tool is provided having an upper headstock with an upper spindle and a lower tailstock with a lower spindle. A workpiece is secured to the lower tailstock and the headstock drives the upper spindle and a milling tool connected thereto at high speeds for milling the workpiece. The vertical machine tool is also operable to perform turning operations on the workpiece using a turning tool connected to the headstock spindle. The headstock has a mechanical spindle lock that may be configured to rigidly fix the headstock spindle to the headstock housing so that, during the turning operation, the headstock spindle is secured against rotation from loading applied to the turning tool held in the headstock spindle. The lower tailstock drives the lower spindle to rotate the workpiece at speeds up to 2,500 RPM while the non-rotating turning tool held in the upper headstock machines the workpiece.

Abstract: A new type of cutting insert is disclosed here which has sandwich structure often with honeycombs in the mid-section of the insert, to allow fluid and/or gas coolant flow through the insert from inside and reduce cutting tool temperature during work-piece cutting operation. The cutting insert includes an insert body, which includes cutting edge, nose, rake face, and flank face. The cutting insert body further contains interior coolant passageways formed by specially manufactured honeycomb structure in the insert body. The number, shape, and size of honeycomb interior passageways are carefully developed and distributed inside the insert body. Therefore, the insert provides adequate strength to withstand force and impact from cutting work-piece and also in the meantime provides effective cooling to the cutting tool.

Abstract: A vibration dampening through coolant tool holder, such as a boring bar, for machining operations, has an internal chamber within which a vibration dampening mass is supported at each axial end by resilient buffer members. A vibration adjusting piston is linearly moveable with the tool holder and has dampening adjustment engagement with the mass. A dampening adjustment mechanism causes linear movement of the piston and applies controlled force of the piston to the mass and has a micrometer type rotary adjustment member that imparts linear force to the piston. The linear piston adjustment can also have a worm gear drive mechanism for controlling linear piston movement.
