  • Patent number: 9549178
Abstract: In various embodiments, an encoder may be configured to divide received content in a first format into one or more segments and then to transcode the previously-divided segments into other formats and/or bitrates for presentation. In various embodiments, the encoder may include multiple segmenting computing devices configured to perform the dividing of the content into segments. The encoder may also include multiple transcoding computing devices configured to transcode the divided segments into a format for presentation. In various embodiments, the computing devices may be configured to communicate with each other via a network to determine which content has been divided into segments and which divided segments have been transcoded. The determination may be performed autonomously by the devices. • Patent number: 9549182
Abstract: Techniques are described for coding residual data of a prediction residual block in either a lossy or lossless coding mode, in which a transform is skipped or bypassed. The techniques of this disclosure include determining whether to reposition, e.g., rotate or flip, residual data of a residual block prior to coding the residual data of the residual block. For both the lossy and lossless coding modes, a video coding device determines whether to reposition residual data of a residual block based on a prediction mode of the residual block and a size of the residual block. In some examples, the techniques disable repositioning for all residual blocks in the inter-prediction mode and the intra block copying prediction mode, and determine to reposition residual blocks in the intra-prediction mode when the residual blocks have block sizes that are less than or equal to a threshold size.

Abstract: A client device may receive encoded video via a transport stream based on a video coding protocol. When errors result in receiving the encoded video, the client device may use an Internet Protocol (IP) connection to recover from the error. The method also includes: obtaining a minimum first difference value among the difference values, and obtaining a second filter block corresponding to the first difference value; encoding the first block according to the second filter block. Accordingly, the video quality and the compression ratio are increased.

Abstract: Video data with both ultra-high definition (UHD) resolution and high or enhanced dynamic range (EDR) data are coded in a backward-compatible layered stream which allows legacy decoders to extract an HD standard dynamic range (SDR) signal. In response to a base layer HD SDR signal, a predicted signal is generated using separate luma and chroma prediction models. In the luma predictor, luma pixel values of the predicted signal are computed based only on luma pixel values of the base layer, while in the chroma predictor, chroma pixel values of the predicted signal are computed based on both the luma and the chroma pixel values of the base layer. A residual signal is computed based on the input UHD EDR signal and the predicted signal. The base layer and the residual signal are coded separately to form a coded bitstream. A compatible dual-layer decoder is also presented.

Abstract: Disclosed herein are systems and methods for causing a stunt switcher to run a multi-video-source digital-video effect (DVE). An example method involves (i) selecting a first log-entry from a traffic log, wherein the first log-entry corresponds to a first video-component (VC) and a first start-time; (ii) selecting a second log-entry from the traffic log, wherein the second log-entry corresponds to a multi-video-source DVE, and a second start-time; (iii) causing the first VC to start being channeled through the stunt switcher proximate the first start-time; (iv) making a determination that a threshold time-period remains before the second start-time; and (v) responsive to making the determination, (a) causing a second VC to start being sent to the stunt switcher, and (b) causing the stunt switcher to run the multi-video-source DVE, thereby causing the stunt switcher to output a combined video, wherein the combined video includes the first VC and the second VC.

The access nodes and methods have a packet inspection unit configured to inspect one or more of the data packets to determine that the data stream includes video data. A congestion unit is coupled to the packet inspection unit and is configured to determine a level of congestion in the communication network, the level of congestion associated with a capacity of the wireless channel, the level of congestion capable of varying over time, and the capacity of the wireless channel capable of varying with the level of congestion. A video scaling unit is configured to adjust the bit rate of the data stream responsive to the packet inspection unit and the congestion unit.

Abstract: A method and apparatus is provided for the delivery of digital television and interactive broadband service in a manner that maximizes the useage of the digital broadcast spectrum. A digital television signal is transmitted to a given broadcast area in a relatively small part (for example, a 1 MHz band) of one or more licensed portions of the digital broadcast spectrum. Interactive broadband service is delivered within at least a portion of the same broadcast area covered by the broadcast digital television signal, in the remainder (for example, a 5 MHz band) of an unused part of the same licensed portion of the digital broadcast spectrum as is occupied by the digital television signal, or within an unlicensed (unused) portion of the digital broadcast spectrum. The broadcasting of the digital television and delivery the interactive broadband service occur simultaneously. In one embodiment, digital television and broadband service are delivered by the same equipment within the same bandwidth.

Abstract: A system and method are provided for dynamically adjusting advertisement (“ad”) time for a multicast channel. In one embodiment, a variable ad insertion function operates to receive one or more multicasts of media content from a core distribution network, insert ad timeslots into the media content, and optionally perform late-binding of ads to the ad timeslots. The media content including the inserted ad timeslots and late-binded ads, if any, is then multicast to associated client devices over a feeder network using corresponding multicast channels. For each multicast channel, insertion of ad timeslots into the associated media content is dynamically controlled based on the number of users currently consuming or predicted to consume the multicast channel, the number of client devices receiving or predicted to receive the multicast channel, or both.

Abstract: A cable network gateway receives a downstream broadband signal via service provider cabling at an interface. An Analog to Digital Converter (ADC) converts the downstream broadband signal to a digital downstream broadband signal. A digital filter attenuates an upper spectrum from the digital downstream broadband signal to produce a filtered digitized downstream broadband signal. An in-home communications transceiver produces a digital in-home communications signal that overlaps the upper spectrum. Summing circuitry sums the filtered digitized downstream broadband signal with the digital in-home communications signal to produce a combined digital signal. A Digital to Analog Converter (DAC) converts the combined digital signal to a combined analog signal and an in-home cable interface transmits the combined analog signal via in-home cabling. The downstream broadband signal may be a Data over Cable System Interface Specification (DOCSIS) 3.0/3.
