Abstract: This invention relates to enhancement of the delivery of laser beams to internal surgical sites by employing, where practical, heavy water rather than normal water as both the irrigation fluid and the laser beam transmission medium that fills some or all of the space between the distal tip of the optical fiber to the surgical site. The use of heavy water is advantageous for surgical procedures employing lasers operating in the wavelength range of 1.0 microns to 2.5 microns where heavy water is substantially more transparent than normal water. This range includes the commercially important semiconductor diode laser operating at 1.47 microns where the optical attenuation coefficient in heavy water is less than one hundredth of that in normal water. Due to the rather high cost of heavy water, methods are described for collecting and re-cycling heavy water used during laser surgery to mitigate this cost.

Abstract: A method for correcting an error of a nonvolatile memory of an embedded component for an end effector used in a robotic surgical system is provided. The robotic surgical system includes a host controller in communication with the embedded component. The embedded component of the end effector performs a test process to test the nonvolatile memory. The host controller of the robotic surgical system requests a result of the test process from the embedded component of the end effector. The host controller determines that the error of the nonvolatile memory has occurred after requesting the result of the test process from the embedded component of the end effector. The host controller modifies the nonvolatile memory of the embedded component of the end effector to correct the error.

Abstract: A LUS robotic surgical system is trainable by a surgeon to automatically move a LUS probe in a desired fashion upon command so that the surgeon does not have to do so manually during a minimally invasive surgical procedure. A sequence of 2D ultrasound image slices captured by the LUS probe according to stored instructions are processable into a 3D ultrasound computer model of an anatomic structure, which may be displayed as a 3D or 2D overlay to a camera view or in a PIP as selected by the surgeon or programmed to assist the surgeon in inspecting an anatomic structure for abnormalities. Virtual fixtures are definable so as to assist the surgeon in accurately guiding a tool to a target on the displayed ultrasound image.

Abstract: A surgical manipulator operates in a manual mode in which a user applies forces and torques to the surgical instrument to cause movement of the energy applicator. The surgical manipulator also operates in a semi-autonomous mode in which the surgical manipulator moves the energy applicator along a tool path. A controller monitors output of a force/torque sensor as the energy applicator is being moved along the tool path in the semi-autonomous mode and transitions from the semi-autonomous mode to the manual mode in response to the output exceeding a limit.

Abstract: Apparatuses and methods for the haptic sensation of forces at a remote location. Groups of MEMS-based pressure sensors are combined into sensor arrays. In some embodiments, the pressure sensors are encased in silicone or other elastomeric substance to allow for routine use in the aqueous environment of the body. The sensor arrays may be housed in a bio-compatible material (e.g., stainless steel, plastic) and may be attached to a printed circuit board to allow the electrical signal generated by the sensors to be communicated to a user. The sensor arrays may be used with faceplates that directly interact with the target tissue or object. The faceplates may be rough, smooth, serrated, or any other texture. The present apparatuses and methods are particularly well suited for robotic surgery and may be used wherever haptic sensing of forces at a remote location is desired.
