Abstract: The present invention is directed to methods of treating a hydrocarbon-containing waste stream to form a hydrocarbon-containing retentate and an aqueous permeate which is substantially free of hydrocarbon. The method includes passing the hydrocarbon-containing waste stream through a microporous membrane to yield the hydrocarbon-containing retentate and the aqueous permeate. The membrane comprises a substantially hydrophobic, polymeric matrix and substantially hydrophilic, finely divided, particulate filler distributed throughout the matrix. The polymeric matrix has pores with a volume average diameter less than 1.0 micron, and at least 50 percent of the pores have a mean diameter of less than 0.35 micron.

Abstract: A method of operating a waste water treatment facility to prevent bulking in which growth of floc forming bacteria is promoted within a selector aeration tank by controlling absorption and bio-oxidation of biodegradable soluble chemical oxygen demand by the bacteria. Absorption is controlled through measurement of a percentage removal of biodegradable soluble chemical oxygen demand and bio-oxidation is controlled through measurement of temperature corrected specific oxygen uptake rate. Both the absorption and bio-oxidation levels are controlled by decreasing the degree to which wastewater influent flow bypasses the selector aeration tank in favor of the main aeration tank when either of absorption or bio-oxidation are below targeted ranges and increasing flow rate of recycle activated sludge from the clarifier to the main aeration tank while decreasing recycle activated sludge flow rate to the selector aeration tank when absorption and bio-oxidation are above such targeted ranges.

Abstract: A reverse osmosis water purifier that monitors Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) at the onset of entering the water filtration system and downstream upon exiting the system. A comparison of the TDS levels is made to each other or predetermined levels, and action is taken regarding whether to bypass the RO filter, or continue filtering through the RO membrane, or combine the two fluid streams. A microbiological barrier filter is introduced in-line with the egress port of a reverse osmosis filter, and downstream of the bypass water circuit. The microbiological filter is utilized to remove microbiological contaminants from the output water, either directly from the RO filter output, or the bypass filter circuit, or both.

Abstract: Fluid desalination systems that include an FO reactor and an electrodeionization reactor with improved membranes and solvents, and a method of using such systems, are provided. A fluid having a first salt concentration is directed to the FO reactor, which uses a solute to draw salt away from the fluid across a membrane into the solute, where the electrodeionization reactor is salinized solute fluid and (i) generate substantially desalinated fluid and (ii) regenerate the solute for return to the forward osmosis reactor. The electrodeionization reactor is configured to draw positive and negative ions of the solute across cationic and anionic membranes, respectively, by applying a voltage across electrodes sandwiching the cationic and anionic membranes. In some cases, the cationic and anionic membranes are porous gelled polymer electrolyte membranes, wherein a saturated solution of the salinized solute fluid is absorbed.

Abstract: This disclosure relates to a method and an apparatus for sealing a double-walled glass tube in a vacuum-tight manner, in particular a production method for manufacturing of solar collectors. By means of a vacuum chamber, inside of which a holding element is fixed and inside of which a heating conductor is arranged, an electro-conductively heating and a subsequent deforming of the double-walled glass tube can be achieved. No additional materials, such as metallic auxiliary element, solders are required. A simple installation inside the vacuum chamber is possible and a minimum vacuum feedthrough for the power supply of a heating conductor is required. The direct heat transfer onto the double walled glass tube and a resulting quick process control allows to reliably seal a double-walled glass tube of a thermal solar collector under vacuum with simple means.
