Abstract: Reducing the microvoid (MV) density in AlN ameliorates numerous problems related to cracking during crystal growth, etch pit generation during the polishing, reduction of the optical transparency in an AlN wafer, and, possibly, growth pit formation during epitaxial growth of AlN and/or AlGaN. This facilitates practical crystal production strategies and the formation of large, bulk AlN crystals with low defect densities—e.g., a dislocation density below 104 cm?2 and an inclusion density below 104 cm?3 and/or a MV density below 104 cm?3.

The article includes a unit of fabric that has been softened by being at least partially submerged in geothermal water from an unprocessed natural source, the geothermal water having a temperature in a range of 120 degrees Fahrenheit to 160 degrees Fahrenheit, and having a mineral content comprising calcium in a range of 100 mg/L to 150 mg/L, sodium in a range of 800 mg/L to 1200 mg/L, and bicarbonate in a range of 250 mg/L to 500 mg/L, such that the geothermal water has a mineral hardness as measured by a content of calcium carbonate in a range of 350 mg/L to 500 mg/L. The submerging includes exposing the unit of fabric to the water in one or more cycles, each of the one or more cycles having a duration of between 1 and 6 hours, sufficient to impart a partial breakdown of fabric fibers of the unit of fabric to render the softening of the unit of fabric.

Abstract: A fabric is treated by applying a nanoparticle type coating to improve their resistance to contamination by foreign matter. The coating is applied during fabric manufacture and cured during heat setting. Alternatively, the coating applied or renewed by utilizing an existing shower or locating a spray boom or other suitable coating application device to apply the coating to the fabric in a controlled, uniform manner. Prior to application of the coating, the fabric is first thoroughly cleaned such as by showering or spraying, and then dried. Following controlled application of the coating, any excess material is removed by a suitable means, such as by vacuum, and the remaining coating on the fabric is then cured, either by utilizing the ambient heat of the equipment or by a portable bank of heaters. In this manner, the fabric does not have to be removed from the machine in order to apply or renew the contaminant resistant coating.

Abstract: Composite pulp compositions for making paper are disclosed that include agricultural residue fibers, softwood fibers, and water. The composite pulp compositions are made by blending an agricultural residue with softwood chips and simultaneously and mechanically pulping the mixture of agricultural residue and softwood in one or more TMP and/or RMP operations. The agricultural residue is present in an amount in a range from about 1% to about 30% of the oven dry weight of the composite pulp composition. Co-pulping the agricultural residue with the softwood improves the tear strength properties of the composite pulp composition. Blended pulp compositions are also disclosed that include a chemical pulp or chemi-mechanical pulp blended with the composite pulp compositions having agricultural residue fibers and softwood fibers. Paper products made from the composite pulp compositions and blended pulp compositions are also disclosed herein.
