Abstract: Microfluidic devices for analyzing droplets are disclosed. A described microfluidic device includes a substrate and a microfluidic channel formed on the substrate. The microfluidic channel includes passages where each passage has a mask pattern configured to modulate a signal of a droplet passing through that passage, such that droplets passing through the passages produce signals. The microfluidic device also includes a detector configured to detect the signals. Methods of analyzing droplets with a microfluidic device having a microfluidic channel formed on a substrate are disclosed. A described method includes passing droplets through the passages, modulating signals from the droplets using mask patterns, formed on the passages; and detecting the signals.

Abstract: There is a need in the point-of-care diagnostic community for an efficient and portable method for testing blood and other biological fluids that can be easily translated across multiple applications. An aspect of the invention described involves monitoring the optical properties of molecularly-mediated nanoparticle assemblies though an optically transparent and magnetically active microfluidic chip, which has recently emerged as an attractive method for biomarker detection as it is an efficient tool for monitoring the binding events that take place in a sensing assay. In one embodiment, this device is directed towards two-nanoparticle assays that rely on the assembly or disassembly of plasmonic and magnetic nanoparticles in response to a certain analyte. A further embodiment is directed to a spiral microfluidic using inertial forces to filter fluid components by size, connected to a magnetically active channel comprised of a nickel micropad array, optically transparent microchannel, and permanent magnets.

  • Publication number: 20170234800
Abstract: This invention discloses an improved laser induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) apparatus and method for the detection of mineral and metal contamination in liquid samples. The mineral and metal contaminant is first collected by filtering the liquid sample with a membrane filter. The membrane filter with the mineral and metal contaminant is then measured by a LIBS apparatus. The LIBS apparatus is based on a high repetition rate pulsed laser. The laser produces a train of laser pulses at a high repetition rate in the kHz (or even higher) range. When the laser beam hits the surface of the membrane filter, it generates several thousands of micro-plasma emissions per second. Synchronized miniature CCD array optical spectrometer modules collect the LIBS signal from these micro-plasma emissions. By adjusting the integration time of the spectrometer to cover a plurality of periods of the laser pulse train, the spectrometer integrates the LIBS signal produced by this plurality of laser pulses.

Abstract: The disclosure describes methods, devices, and system that measure chemisorption potentiometrically for detection of target molecules. In one example, a device includes a semiconductor, an ionic conducting electronic insulator coupled to the semiconductor, a floating gate electrode comprising a first portion and a second portion, the first portion being coupled to the semiconductor via the ionic conducting electronic insulator, an aqueous buffer, and a primary gate electrode coupled to the second portion of the floating gate electrode via the aqueous buffer. The second portion of the floating gate electrode may comprise a probe configured to react with a target chemical composition of a molecule to detect the presence of the molecule. Reaction with the target chemical composition may change an electrical property of the device and indicate the presence of the molecule in the aqueous buffer.

Abstract: A multi-gas detection apparatus is configured such that electric power supplied from a power supply to a heater is controlled by pulse width modulation so as to control the temperature of a first solid electrolyte body. The multi-gas detection apparatus detects the concentration of ammonia by using a first ammonia detection section in which an electromotive force is generated between a first reference electrode and a first detection electrode in accordance with the concentration of ammonia in the exhaust gas. The multi-gas detection apparatus calculates the amount of a change (i.e., offset voltage) in the ammonia electromotive force caused by change in the output voltage of the power supply. The multi-gas detection apparatus corrects the ammonia electromotive force generated in the first ammonia detection section through use of the calculated change amount.

Abstract: The present disclosure provides methods and mechanisms for measuring small masses attached to a substrate within a microcantilever. Specifically, the disclosure describes the measurement of small particles accumulated at a substrate that cannot be flowed through a microchannel within a microcantilever. A resonance measurement is acquired at a first time. A pair resonance measurements is then acquired at a second point in time—one with the test mass at a first position off or along the microcantilever, the second with the test mass at a second position along the microcantilever. Comparing the resonance frequencies determined for the two test mass positions allows for disambiguation of changes in the mass of the particles from changes in the resonant behavior of the microcantilever itself.
