Abstract: Laser speckle microrheology is used to determine a mechanical property of a biological tissue, namely, an elastic modulus. Speckle frames may be acquired by illuminating a coherent light and capturing back-scattered rays in parallel and cross-polarized states with respect to illumination. The speckle frames may be analyzed temporally to obtain diffuse reflectance profiles (DRPs) for the parallel-polarized and cross-polarized states. A scattering characteristic of particles in the biological tissue may be determined based on the DRPs, and a displacement characteristic may be determined based at least in part on a speckle intensity autocorrelation function and the scattering characteristic. A size characteristic of scattering particles may be determined based on the DRP for the parallel polarization state. The mechanical property may be calculated using the displacement and size characteristics.

  • Publication number: 20170248532
Abstract: For each X-ray path through a tissue, numerous trials are conducted. In each trial, X-ray photons are emitted along the path until a Geiger-mode avalanche photodiode “clicks”. A temporal average—i.e., the average amount of time elapsed before a “click” occurs—is calculated. This temporal average is, in turn, used to estimate a causal intensity of X-ray light that passes through the tissue along the path and reaches the diode. Based on the causal intensities for multiple paths, a computer generates computed tomography (CT) images or 2D digital radiographic images. The causal intensities used to create the images are estimated from temporal statistics, and not from conventional measurements of intensity at a pixel. X-ray dosage needed for imaging is dramatically reduced as follows: a “click” of the photodiode triggers negative feedback that causes the system to halt irradiation of the tissue along a path, until the next trial begins.

Abstract: A sample injection method for liquid chromatography is performed with an injection valve having a waste port, two sample loop ports, and two high-pressure ports. One high-pressure port can be connected to a pump and the other high-pressure port can be connected to a chromatography column. A sample loop is connected to one of the sample loop ports on one end and to a pump volume of a sample conveying device on the other end. A section of the sample loop can be separated to facilitate receiving a sample fluid in the sample loop. A control unit controls the injection valve and the sample conveying device. The sample injector allows a sample to be loaded into the sample loop and then pressurized to an operating pressure prior to injecting the sample into the chromatography column. The sample loop may also be isolated from the operating pressure for facilitating depressurization of the loop.

Abstract: The disclosed chromatographic system enables sample slices to be moved back and forth between columns to rapidly isolate and measure a single or multiple components in a complex matrix. The independently controlled, two column system allows for the flow-recycling to take place since the sample slice can be effectively halted on either column until the second column is thermally ready to accept it again. The plumbing scheme also allows one to make an infinitely long column by being able to move components back and forth between the two by activating and deactivating the valve at the appropriate times.

A column packing method includes the steps of providing a packing controller disposed on the other end of the tubular structure, and permitting the packing controller to variably adjust the flow rate and pressure of the packing material slurry so that they can be maintained at the predetermined flow rate and pressure level.

Abstract: A liquid chromatograph comprising a column coupled to a microring resonator array and methods of using the same are disclosed. The microring resonator array measures the bulk refractive index of the mobile phase and any sample injected onto and separated in the column. While carrying out the methods, the composition of a mobile phase passing through the chromatography column may remain substantially constant (isocratic elution) or it may vary (gradient elution). One or more microrings may comprise a covering to act as a thermal control. In addition, the sensor surface may be modified with some type of capture agent that can interact with one or more components in the sample.

Abstract: A controller as a CO2 sensor reference value calibration apparatus calibrates a reference value of the CO2 sensor in the following manner. Introduction of outside air is started after a person is not detected. A CO2 concentration, which is acquired when a preset first waiting time elapses, is set as a provisional reference value. The carbon dioxide concentration, which is acquired when a preset second waiting time elapses, is compared with the provisional reference value. In a case where a change rate of the carbon dioxide concentration is out of a preset allowable range, the carbon dioxide concentration is acquired when the second waiting time elapses after newly setting the acquired carbon dioxide concentration as the provisional reference value. In a case where the change rate of the carbon dioxide concentration is in the allowable range, the currently set provisional reference value is set as the reference value.
