Abstract: A camera calibration system jointly calibrates multiple cameras in a camera rig system. The camera calibration system obtains configuration information about the multiple cameras in the camera rig system, such as position and orientation for each camera relative to other cameras. The camera calibration system estimates calibration parameters (e.g., rotation and translation) for the multiple cameras based on the obtained configuration information. The camera calibration system receives 2D images of a test object captured by the multiple cameras and obtains known information about the test object such as location, size, texture and detailed information of visually distinguishable points of the test object. The camera calibration system then generates a 3D model of the test object based on the received 2D images and the estimated calibration parameters. The generated 3D model is evaluated in comparison with the actual test object to determine a calibration error.

Abstract: A canvas generation system generates a canvas view of a scene based on a set of original camera views depicting the scene, for example to recreate a scene in virtual reality. Canvas views can be generated based on a set of synthetic views generated from a set of original camera views. Synthetic views can be generated, for example, by shifting and blending relevant original camera views based on an optical flow across multiple original camera views. An optical flow can be generated using an iterative method which individually optimizes the optical flow vector for each pixel of a camera view and propagates changes in the optical flow to neighboring optical flow vectors.

Abstract: A predictive video coder performs gradient prediction based on previous blocks of image data. For a new block of image data, the prediction determines a horizontal gradient and a vertical gradient from a block diagonally above the new block (vertically above a previous horizontally adjacent block). Based on these gradients, the encoder predicts image information based on image information of either the horizontally adjacent block or a block vertically adjacent to the new block. The encoder determines a residual that is transmitted in an output bitstream. The decoder performs the identical gradient prediction and predicts image information without need for overhead information. The decoder computes the actual information based on the predicted information and the residual from the bitstream.

Abstract: An HMD device encodes different portions of an image for display with different encoding characteristics based on a user's predicted area of focus as indicated by one or more of a pose of the HMD device and a gaze direction of the user's eye(s) identified at the HMD device. By employing different encoding characteristics, the HMD device supports relatively high-quality encoding while maintaining a relatively small size of the encoded image to allow for transfer of the image to a display panel at a high frame rate. Thus, the HMD device can encode a portion of the image that is expected to be in the user's area of focus at a high resolution, and encode the portion of the image that is expected to be in the user's peripheral vision at a lower resolution.

Abstract: In various embodiments, a quality trainer trains a model that computes a value for a perceptual video quality metric for encoded video content. During a pre-training phase, the quality trainer partitions baseline values for metrics that describe baseline encoded video content into partitions based on genre. The quality trainer then performs cross-validation operations on the partitions to optimize hyperparameters associated with the model. Subsequently, during a training phase, the quality trainer performs training operations on the model that includes the optimized hyperparameters based on the baseline values for the metrics to generate a trained model. The trained model accurately tracks the video quality for the baseline encoded video content. Further, because the cross-validation operations minimize any potential overfitting, the trained model accurately and consistently predicts perceived video quality for non-baseline encoded video content across a wide range of genres.

Abstract: Innovations in video decoding and rendering operations in a graphics pipeline, in which at least some of the operations are performed using a graphics processing unit (“GPU”), are described. The video playback tool performs operations to decode the encoded data and reconstruct the picture. For a given block (e.g., of a macroblock, coding unit) of the picture, a graphics primitive represents texture values for the given block as a point for processing by the GPU. The video playback tool uses one or more shader routines, executable by the GPU, to transfer texture values to a display buffer. Abstract: A digital video recorder control database is maintained for a digital video recorder in communication with a plurality of set-top boxes. The database includes program content, associated programming metadata, and a recording schedule. A subset of the digital video recorder control database is pushed from the digital video recorder control database to the plurality of set-top boxes for local caching on the plurality of set-top boxes. The subset includes at least a portion of the recording schedule.

Abstract: Methods, computer readable media, and apparatuses for switching streams in response to detecting a start trigger are presented. A program's start trigger indicating that the program is upcoming may be detected on a first stream, and in response to detecting the start trigger on the first stream, a second stream containing the program may be switched to. The program may be a video program. Segment triggers may be detected and may be used to selectively record and/or delete segments of the program according to a priority scheme. Multiple start triggers may be detected at decreasing time intervals. The existence of a recording conflict may be determined based on a program's start trigger and a user may be alerted of the recording conflict.

Abstract: Methods, systems, and computer readable media may be operable to facilitate anticipatory conditioning of multimedia content for delivery to one or more devices. A multimedia device may track and record correlations between each of a plurality of devices, wherein the correlations are based on the order in which one or more devices request synchronization of a piece of content following a request by a first device for synchronization of the same piece of content. The multimedia device may update device correlations with each subsequent content synchronization request. When the multimedia device receives a synchronization request for a piece of content, the multimedia device may identify a device correlated with the requesting device and may initiate a conditioning of the piece of content for delivery to the correlated device without first receiving a request for synchronization of the piece of content from the correlated device.

Abstract: A method executes at a server system with one or more processors and memory. The server receives demographic information for a plurality of household members. The demographic information includes at least age and gender. The server receives television viewing information for the household. The server identifies one or more television viewing sessions from the television viewing information and selects one of the television viewing sessions. The server identifies one or more television programs tuned during the selected televisions viewing session and accesses demographic skew data for at least a subset of the television programs tuned. The demographic skew data for a television program identifies fractions of viewers of the television program from predefined demographic segments. The server associates a household member with the television viewing session at least in part by correlating the demographic skew data of the television programs tuned with the demographic information of the first household member.
