Abstract: The disclosed inventive concept provides an intake manifold for an internal combustion engine that demonstrates reduced NVH. The disclosed inventive concept provides an intake manifold having intersecting ribs that extend along both the plenum and the intake runners. Impressions or recessed areas are selectively disposed at critical locations between certain ones of the intersecting ribs. Flat areas are formed between each impression and the adjacent ribs. The shapes of the impressions may be polygonal, round or oval or mixture thereof. The thickness of the intake manifold wall may be constant or variable. The location, shape and depth of each of the impressions are selected to thereby optimize both NVH and flow performances. These impressions provide additional localized stiffness that improves high frequency noise without increasing wall thickness, weight, design complexity, or overall cost of tooling, material or manufacture.

Abstract: A gas turbine fuel injector assembly including one or more dampers for damping vibration of one or more fuel conduits in the assembly. The dampers may at least partially surround the fuel conduits, and each damper has an intermediate portion that is bowed relative to axial end portions to form a pocket, which enables the damper to be free to flex radially for damping vibration experienced by the fuel conduit during operation. The damper may be a wire mesh damper formed with interwoven wires that are configured to move relative to each other in response to vibrational movement of the fuel conduit. The wire mesh damper also may enable fluids, such as gases or fuel, to flow through gaps in the wire mesh. The damper may support and damp individual fuel conduits, thereby enabling the fuel conduits to thermally expand independently of each other in the assembly.

Abstract: When a start condition is satisfied after the internal combustion engine has been stopped according to an automatic stop control, a control apparatus reversely rotates the engine to compress an air in an expansion stroke cylinder at that time point, and thereafter generates a first time combustion. The apparatus determines whether the start condition becomes satisfied based on a first start request owing to a driving operation by a driver of a vehicle on which the engine is mounted. When the start condition becomes satisfied based on the first start request, the control apparatus makes a maximum value of an engine generating torque by the first time combustion and/or a maximum torque of the engine generating torque by a second time combustion larger as compared to when the start condition becomes satisfied based on a second start request other than the first start request.

Abstract: A method diagnoses a no-start condition in a powertrain having an engine and a starter system operable for starting the engine. The starter system includes a battery, solenoid relay, starter solenoid, and starter motor. The method includes recording starter data over a calibrated sampling duration in response to a requested start event when the solenoid relay is enabled, including a cranking voltage and engine speed. If no battery current sensor is used, the method derives a resistance ratio using an open-circuit voltage and a minimum cranking voltage of the battery. When such a sensor is used, the method derives a battery and starter resistance. A fault mode of the starter system is then identified via a controller using the starter data and either the resistance ratio or the battery and starter resistances. A control action executes that corresponds to the identified fault mode.

Abstract: A two-cavity pump having a single valve in one cavity and a bidirectional valve in another cavity is disclosed. The pump has a side wall closed by two end walls for containing a fluid. An actuator is disposed between the two end walls and functions as a portion of a common end wall of the two cavities. The actuator causes an oscillatory motion of the common end walls to generate radial pressure oscillations of the fluid within both cavities. An isolator flexibly supports the actuator. The first cavity includes the single valve disposed in one of a first and second aperture in the end wall to enable fluid flow in one direction. The second cavity includes the bidirectional valve disposed in one of a third and fourth aperture in the end wall to enable fluid flow in both directions.

Abstract: A bi-directional pump system that can be configured for a plurality of operating modes. The bi-directional pump system includes a plurality of bi-directional pumps each having their own valving system that are connected to a common high pressure manifold, a low pressure manifold and a suction manifold. Via the respective valve systems, each pump can be configured into: (1) a single-acting pumping mode; (2) a double-acting pumping mode; (3) an inactive free motion mode; and (4) an inactive rigid mode. One exemplary application of the bi-directional pump system is on an articulated wave energy conversion system that consists of three floating barges: a front barge, a center barge and a rear barge where the front barge and center barge are hingedly connected as are the center barge and the rear barge. A first set of the bi-directional pumps span the first hinge connection and the second set of bi-directional pumps span the second hinge connection.

Abstract: There is disclosed a modular, linearly actuated high-pressure pump for use in various applications with high-pressure fuel systems, in particular liquid cryogenic fuels such as Natural Gas, Hydrogen, Nitrogen and Argon (LNG/LH2/LN2/LAR). The pump utilizes linear actuation which smooths out the power profile. There are no dynamic seals which prevents failure from leakage. The primary benefit of a smooth, no pulse output and lack of dynamic seals is a longer life of the pump. Marine fuel systems that utilize cryogenic LNG are a primary application.

Abstract: A method for determining cavitation in a pump is disclosed. The method includes detecting, by a sensor, a pressure of a fluid pumped by the pump and determining, by a controller, whether the pressure exceeds a pressure range. Cavitation is determined when the pressure exceeds the pressure range. The method includes selectively incrementing or decrementing, by the controller, a counter value of a counter based on determining whether the pressure exceeds the pressure range. The counter value is incremented when the pressure exceeds the pressure range, and decremented when the pressure does not exceed the pressure range. The method includes determining, by the controller, whether the counter value exceeds a threshold value, and generating, by the controller, an alert when the counter value exceeds the threshold value and causing, by the controller, the alert to be displayed via a display.

Abstract: A foam pump for generating a foam comprising a foamable liquid and air has dual, coaxial air and liquid cylinders, each having a respective air and liquid piston which move together during a dispensing operation. In certain embodiments, the air and liquid cylinders are modular, separately formed components. In certain embodiments, a plurality of differently sized, liquid cylinders are provided, each with a corresponding liquid piston which is complementary in size thereto. Providing multiple differently sized liquid cylinder and piston components allows the pump to be configured to deliver a desired quantity of foamable liquid and/or a desired liquid-to-air ratio in the foam output of the pump. The differently sized liquid cylinder and piston components can be used interchangeably with a common air cup design and other common pump components, the modular construction allowing custom pump output configurations to be provided with minimal tooling investment per output size.
