Publication number: 20180216010Abstract: A process has been developed for producing diesel fuel or jet fuel from renewable feedstocks such as fats and oils from plants and animals. The process involves producing a hydrogen-rich mixture in a reformer, hydrolyzing a renewable feedstock to produce a free fatty acid stream and a glycerol-containing stream, catalytically treating the free fatty acid stream by hydrogenating and deoxygenating to provide a hydrocarbon fraction useful as a diesel fuel or jet fuel. A selective separation such as a hot high pressure hydrogen stripper may be used to remove at least the carbon oxides from the reaction zone effluent and provide a liquid recycle stream at pressure and temperature. A vapor stream is separated from the effluent and at least carbon dioxide is removed using at least one amine absorber. The resulting hydrogen-rich stream is recycled to the reaction zone.Type: ApplicationFiled: February 1, 2017Publication date: August 2, 2018Inventor: Jianhui Hong

Publication number: 20180216057Abstract: The present invention relates in part to devices, systems, and methods for the production and characterization of engineered tissue constructs. The devices and methods generate decellularized tissue constructs that can be recellularized using donor cells for high-throughput studies of organ physiology, and/or organ pathology. The devices and methods can be used with the systems to mechanically and electrically stimulate the engineered tissue constructs under culture or physiological conditions to detect and assess the presence and degree of any organ pathologies.Type: ApplicationFiled: January 30, 2018Publication date: August 2, 2018Inventors: Stuart Campbell, Jonas Schwan, Andrea Kwaczala, Thomas Ryan, Daniel Jacoby, Yibing Qyang, Lorenzo Sewanan, Ronald Ng, Jeffery Alexander Clark

Publication number: 20180216058Abstract: The presently disclosed subject matter provides a biomimetic lung disease model, and methods of its production and use. In one exemplary embodiment, the biomimetic lung disease model can include a first and second microchannel with a membrane coated with airway epithelial cells disposed between the microchannels and at least one device coupled to the biomimetic model that delivers an agent to at least one microchannel. In certain embodiments, the agent is cigarette smoke.Type: ApplicationFiled: July 27, 2016Publication date: August 2, 2018Applicant: THE TRUSTEES OF THE UNIVERSITY OF PENNSYLVANIAInventors: Dongeun Huh, Mark Mondrinos, Woo Yul Byun
