Abstract: Some embodiments of a system or method for treating heart tissue can include a control system and catheter device operated in a manner to intermittently occlude a heart vessel for controlled periods of time that provide redistribution of blood flow. In particular embodiments, the system can be configured to provide an estimation of the cumulative effects of the treatment. For example, some embodiments of the system or method can treat myocardium that is at risk of infarction by intermittently altering blood flow in a venous system to induce microcirculation within the myocardium, and can output a cumulative dosage value indicative of a measurement of progress of reducing an infarct size.

Abstract: A method for capturing an object in a cavity in a patient is described. The method includes advancing a ureteroscope into the cavity containing the object. A basket is advanced through a working channel of the ureteroscope. The basket is opened within the cavity and is positioned so as to enclose the object. Then, two actions are performed simultaneously. The basket is collapsed while simultaneously the basket tool is advanced forward so that the object remains within the basket, ideally near the center of the basket, as the basket closes around the object. Once the object is captured, the basket is retracted to remove the object out of the cavity. Further, this process may be automated by having the method carried out by robotic arms acting in tandem, with one or more robotic arms advancing the basket tool or ureteroscope, and another robotic arm collapsing the basket.

Abstract: A dynamic longitudinal connecting member assembly includes an anchor member having an integral or otherwise fixed elongate core of circular or non-circular cross-section. The core is pre-tensioned and extends through at least one elastic spacer and at least one outer sleeve. The anchor member and the outer sleeve each attach to at least one bone anchor. In operation, the core is held in tension by the spacer.

Abstract: Devices and methods are provided for immobilizing facet joints of the vertebral column. Embodiments of the invention provide an implant that is inserted in a facet joint from which cartilage has been removed, and which retains the approximate original spacing of the facets in the joint. A retaining arrangement, such as an adhesive, a threaded fastener, or a screw is then used to secure the implant in the joint.

Abstract: A rod reducer including a housing defining an opening, a body member defining an opening and a slot, a shaft disposed through the opening of the housing and coupled to the opening of the body member, an anvil including a linkage extending therefrom, the linkage coupled to the body member and the anvil, a plurality of arm members, and a biasing element disposed between the body member and the anvil. A pin of the linkage is slidably disposed within the slot, and the biasing element is configured to bias the anvil distally with respect to the body member. Rotation of the shaft translates into linear movement, relative to the housing, of the shaft, the body member, and the anvil. The arm members are coupled to the housing and movable towards a parallel configuration as the anvil is advanced away from the housing to engage a bone screw.

Abstract: An assembly and method are disclosed. The assembly includes an orthopaedic implant and an active compression member. The implant has a compression screw hole with a step and the active compression member includes an outer tube and an inner slide. The tube and slide allow the proximal end portion and the distal end portion to move relative to one another. The method includes inserting a guide wire, placing a drill over the guide wire and drilling into a femur, tapping the drilled hole, using a compression device to reduce the fracture using the orthopaedic implant step, and inserting one or more active compression members into the tapped hole.

Abstract: Provided is a bone fixation plate, which is based on a divergent, biplanar and segmental concept which consists in the use of self-stable screws with a divergent biplanar arrangement by segments, wherein each segment is composed by self-stable screws which diverge certain degrees to each other, ending thereby located on different fixation planes. Thus, the divergent biplanar fixation favors the stability in relation to torsional loads in locked systems, since unlike the fixation with cortical screws where the bone helps to support the loads by having an implant-bone contact, when self-stable screws are used the loads are transmitted in the interface between them and the implant, being very prone to “cutting out” and the fracture of the screws when these are located in only one fixation plane.

Abstract: A compression plate kit that allows for manual compression of a bone discontinuity includes a bone plate, two or more reduction screws, and a compression clamp. The compression clamp can include engagement members configured to engage the reduction screws, thereby allowing a practitioner to compress a bone discontinuity by manually closing the compression clamp. One or more implementations of a kit of the present invention can provide a practitioner with physical or tactile feedback during the compression of a bone discontinuity, and thus, provide the practitioner with the ability to better control the compression and spacing of bone portions during a reduction.

Abstract: Provided is a design concept for a bone fixating device that can be used both for closing the physys and also for fixing fractures by means of a tension band, wherein the device is based on the concept of two fixed ends joined by flexible wire, which facilitates both its installations and use, which also allows to perform a minimally invasive surgery due to the reduced size of the implant, whose profile must be as low as possible in order to avoid tissue damage during surgery. Thus, the design of the device allows the fastening screws to be located as far as possible from the physys, i.e. in the safe zone, reducing ischemia in the physys and, also, allowing for the surgery to be handled percutaneously.

Abstract: An adjustable wedge can be used in an Evans technique foot and ankle reconstructive wedge surgery. The adjustable wedge can include a slide. The slide can be positioned to a suitable location on a patient's calcaneus, then fastened to the calcaneus through first and second holes through the slide at opposite ends of the slide. The adjustable wedge can include a body having a pair of wedged surfaces configured to contact the cutout of the calcaneus. The body can include a slot extending between the wedged surfaces. The slot can be sized to accommodate the slide so that the slide is slidable within the slot. A circumferential surface can extend circumferentially between the wedged surfaces. A threaded hole can extend through the circumferential surface to the slot. The threaded hole can receive a fastener, such as a set screw, to secure the slide to the body.
