  • Patent number: 10054494
Abstract: An Apparatus and method are provided for sensing temperature of a sample. Apparatus 2 has a sensor 5, positionable relative to a sample 3, which is responsive to temperature of a region of the sample at each position of the sensor. Sensor circuitry 10 provides a response signal indicative of the sensor response at the position of the sensor. Sample-temperature controller 12 controls temperature of sample 3 independently of sensor 5. Sample-temperature controller 12 effects a time-dependent modulation of the sample temperature such that a time-dependent heat flux is generated between the sample and the sensor at the position of the sensor. Temperature analyzer 11 extracts time-averaged and time-dependent components of the response signal due to the modulation of the sample temperature, and processes the components to produce an output indicative of temperature of the sample at the position of the sensor.

Abstract: Systems, methods, and devices of the various embodiments enable mitigation of the effects of birefringence in Optical Frequency Domain Reflectometer (OFDR) sensing fiber. Various embodiments enable the measurement of the polarization state of the light in a sensing fiber throughout the entire sensing cable in a highly distributed manner typical of OFDR systems. Various embodiments enable the production of a distributed fiber birefringence measurement throughout the length of an OFDR sensing fiber. Various embodiments may enable OFDR to be 100% polarization diverse, meaning that polarization effects in the fiber optic cables and sensing fiber do not negatively effect measurements. Additionally, the highly distributed measurement of the polarization state and related birefringence in a sensing fiber of the various embodiments may enable new types of measurements such as pressure, twisting, and bending along the sensing fiber.

Abstract: The load-bearing capacity of cylindrical shells of a composite fiber material that are at risk of buckling is determined by deriving improved reduction factors for analytical calculation of the design load. A load distribution head applies an axially acting force to a cylinder shell. A dent actuator dents the surface of the cylinder shell in a predetermined dent direction with a predetermined dent depth. A dent force is determined when a steadily increasing, axially acting force is applied to the cylinder shell by the load distribution head until a complete failure of the cylinder shell is detected. An analysis unit determines a dent depth from a data memory at which a dent force at a complete failure of the cylinder shell is at a maximum compared to dent forces of other dent depths.
