Abstract: A system for determining a road type includes processing circuitry configured to receive information from a plurality of sensors. The information corresponds to one or more of operation of a host vehicle and an environment surrounding the host vehicle. Additionally, the system determines whether one or more of the plurality of sensors detects an off highway event, classifies the road type as a local road in response to one or more of the plurality of sensors detecting an off highway event, determines whether the speed of the host vehicle is greater than a first predetermined speed for a first predetermined amount of time, and classifies the road type as a limited access highway in response to the speed of the host vehicle being greater than the first predetermined speed for the first predetermined amount of time.

Abstract: This application relates to apparatus and methods for traffic monitoring, especially for monitoring of road traffic flow using fibre optic distributed acoustic sensing. The method involves performing distributed acoustic sensing (DAS) using a suitable interrogator unit (103) to provide a measurement signal from each of a plurality of sensing portions of a first length of a sensing optical fibre (102), where the first length of the sensing optical fibre runs alongside a road (101) having a plurality of lanes. The measurement signals from the sensing portions are processed to detect vehicles (104) travelling on the road and to determine at least one detected traffic flow property. The method further involves using a traffic flow model to relate the detected flow property to a modelled flow property, where the traffic flow model is configured to model vehicle detections that will be missed by the distributed acoustic sensing i.e. an indication of vehicles present on the road but not detected by the DAS sensor.

Abstract: An overhead structure determination device mounted in a vehicle includes a sensor, a target information acquisition device, a road surface height acquisition device, and a determination device. The target information acquisition device detects a target in front of the vehicle using the sensor and acquires a relative position and a relative height of the target with respect to the vehicle. The road surface height acquisition device acquires a relative height of a below-target road surface with respect to the vehicle as a road surface height. The below-target road surface is a road surface at the relative position of the target. When a difference between the relative height of the target and the road surface height exceeds a threshold, the determination device determines that the target is an overhead structure present above a height of the vehicle.

Compensating for the noise also includes sensing an observation current from noise in an observation channel of the display and scaling the observation current to generate a scaled observation current. The scaled observation current is subtracted from the sense current to generate a compensated output. The compensated output is used to drive compensation operations of the display based at least in part on the compensated output to reduce effects of the noise.
