Abstract: A process and system for recovering natural gas liquids (NGL) using a combination of J-T cooling and membrane separation. The process involves compressing, separating, and cooling a flare gas stream comprising at least methane and C3+ hydrocarbons prior to being introduced to a J-T valve. The cooled stream exiting the J-T valve is further separated, producing a NGL product stream and an uncondensed gas stream. The uncondensed gas stream is directed to a membrane separation step, which results in a C3+ hydrocarbon enriched stream and a C3+ hydrocarbon depleted stream. The C3+ hydrocarbon enriched stream may be recycled back to the process to recover more NGL.

Abstract: Polymeric substrates, optionally in sheet form, treated with a thin layer of photoresist are perforated by laser ablation. Following removal of the photoresist the polymer substrates perforated with holes are patterned in stripes by photolithography, which is followed by synthesis of a cell-adhesive organometallic/self-assembled monolayer of phosphonate (SAMP) interface in the exposed regions, providing well-aligned continuous stripes for various levels of perforation. Cells plated on each of these 2-dimensional (2D) perforated surfaces attach to the interface and spread in alignment with pattern fidelity that is as high as that measured on a non-perforated, patterned substrate. A stack of such 2D patterned polymers yields a 3-dimensional (3D) device which facilitates cell growth and viability via the perforations.

Abstract: Methods and compositions herein provide non-naturally occurring ?-butyrolactones (GBLs) in racemic mixtures that increase efficiency and effectiveness of screening for production of antibiotics, and enhance yields and express silent pathways. Non-naturally occurring GBLs were synthesized and found to stimulate antibiotic production in several different streptomycete strains. Antibiotic production by Streptomyces coelicolor was induced by a racemic mixture of non-cognate stereoisomers of VB-D, seven of which are non-naturally occurring. Further, novel A-factor-type GBL analogs stimulated antibiotic production in S. coelicolor. Synthesis in response to the treatment with the non-cognates GBL was observed for known compounds including undecylprodigiosin, desferrioxamine and streptorubin B, as was synthesis of a compound of unknown structure.

Abstract: Compositions and methods are described for preparing media, feeds, and supplements. Such methods and medias may display increased stability of labile components and may use, for example, microsuspension and/or encapsulation technologies, chelation, and optionally, coating and/or mixing the labile compounds with anti-oxidants. The compositions may withstand thermal and/or irradiation treatment and have reduced virus number. These techniques may result in product with extended shelf-life, extended release of their internal components into culture, or in product that can be added aseptically into a bioreactor using minimal volumes. The compositions and methods may optimize the bioproduction workflow and increase efficiency.

Abstract: A micro-scale artificial gland is disclosed in the form of an independent unit for promoting biological activity. The artificial gland includes cells formed in a membrane enclosing a reservoir. The reservoir is a bio-reactor capable of containing a product of activity of the cells. The reservoir comprises a gas, a liquid, and a gel and preferably also contains nanoparticles, a buffer, a surfactant, and, a gel precursor. The reservoir may also contain cells. Nanoparticles may also surround the artificial gland to form a protective coating. A variety of methods are disclosed for making the artificial gland by directed assembly of cells into the artificial micro-gland by gel, liquid or bubble templating. All involve coating the surface of gel, droplet or bubble with the living cells and the stabilizing the cells on the surface of gels, droplets or bubbles.

Abstract: The invention provides for methods of obtaining cells from mammalian, preferably human, postpartum umbilical cord arterial tissue and use of these cells to treat ocular degenerative conditions. In particular, methods of the invention result in the isolation of a homogenous population of human postpartum umbilical cord arterial tissue-derived cells. In certain embodiments, the cells: express CD13, CD90, NG2, and HLA-ABC; do not express one or more of CD31, CD34, CD45, CD117, FSP1, and E-cadherin. In other embodiments, the cells secrete one or more of thrombospondin-1, BDNF and sVEGFR1.
