Abstract: A culture module is contemplated that allows the perfusion and optionally mechanical actuation of one or more microfluidic devices, such as organ-on-a-chip microfluidic devices comprising cells that mimic at least one function of an organ in the body. A method for pressure control is contemplated to allow the control of flow rate (while perfusing cells) despite limitations of common pressure regulators. The method for pressure control allows for perfusion of a microfluidic device, such as an organ on a chip microfluidic device comprising cells that mimic cells in an organ in the body, that is detachably linked with said assembly, so that fluid enters ports of the microfluidic device from a fluid reservoir, optionally without tubing, at a controllable flow rate.

Abstract: A microbial sensor, system and method that can be used to determine the chemical environment and/or substrate concentrations in saturated and unsaturated natural and environments, such as soils, aquifers and sediments are disclosed. The system may be used for monitoring municipal and industrial treatment facilities and sites where chemicals or contaminants were released to natural environments. The electrochemical microbial sensor system can be referenced using either a cathode exposed to oxygen or a reference cell (silver/silver chloride or calomel) for monitoring natural or man-made environments.

Abstract: A polymer-based material having covalently bonded enzymatically degradable peptide sequences not degradable by the biological and metabolic activity of cells and tissues is disclosed, wherein the peptide sequences are incorporated into the polymer-based material or conjugated to the polymer-based material. The peptide sequence can be part of the three-dimensional or two-dimensional structure of the polymer-based material. A controlled degradation of a covalent bond in the peptide sequence is effected. Use of such polymer-based material for an in vitro production of cell cultures or tissues or organs, for an in vivo stabilization of donated cells, tissues or organs is also disclosed. An adhesive bond between the material and the sample, i.e. cells, tissues, or organs is controlledly degradable without destroying the integrity of the sample.

Abstract: The present invention relates to methods for separating target cells from non-target cells using immunorosettes and magnetic particles. The method involves contacting a sample containing target cells and secondary targets such as erythrocytes with an antibody composition which allows immunorosettes of the target cells and the secondary targets to form. The sample is subsequently contacted with a second antibody composition which allows the binding of magnetic particles to the formed immunorosettes and free secondary targets. The immunorosettes and secondary targets labeled with magnetic particles are separated from non-target cells using a magnetic field. The antibody composition optionally contains bifunctional antibodies or tetrameric antibody complexes.
