Abstract: Nucleic acid memory strands encoding digital data using a sequence of homopolymer tracts of repeated nucleotides provides a cheaper and faster alternative to conventional digital DNA storage techniques. The use of homopolymer tracts allows for lower fidelity, high throughput sequencing techniques such as nanopore sequencing to read data encoded in the memory strands. Specialized synthesis techniques allow for synthesis of long memory strands capable of encoding large volumes of data despite the reduced data density afforded by homopolymer tracts as compared to conventional single nucleotide sequences.

Abstract: Recovery of scandium from mined red mud includes adding an acid to a quantity of red mud for converting oxides in the red mud, and roasting the quantity of red mud for decomposing compounds having low thermal stability, typically iron and titanium. Water is added to the roasted red mud for leaching the converted oxides into a leach liquor mixture including scandium and other dissolved rare earths, and the leach liquor mixture is agitated by sonication or ball milling to increase an exposed surface area of red mud particles in the leach liquor. PH of the leach liquor is adjusted to precipitate the rare earths while leaving the scandium in solution in the leach liquor, followed by precipitating the separated scandium oxalate remaining in the leach liquor by reducing the pH and adding oxalic acid. Precipitated scandium oxalate may then be filtered from the leach liquor.

Abstract: A bi-continuous composite of a refractory alloy and copper, and a method for manufacturing the same, are provided. The method for manufacturing a bi-continuous composite of a refractory alloy and copper includes: providing an alloy melt swapping (AMS) precursor; providing a copper melt with a temperature in a range of 1085° C. to 3410° C.; immersing the AMS precursor into the copper melt; and removing the AMS precursor from the copper melt. The AMS precursor includes elements having positive and negative mixing enthalpy with copper, respectively. The AMS precursor into which the copper melt is diffused becomes a bi-continuous composite with a first phase formed from the copper and a second phase formed from the AMS precursor.

Abstract: The present invention discloses a new alloy design of precipitation strengthened high entropy superalloy (HESA), which is composed of at least one principal element, a plurality of base element, and at least one precipitation strengthening element for controlling the elemental segregation between the high-entropy matrix and ordered precipitate. Through the addition of the precipitation strengthening element, while substituting the same amount of the principle element, not only the ordering energy and the volume fraction of strengthening precipitates, but also the mechanical strength of the alloy can be apparently elevated. Therefore, this newly-developed precipitation strengthened HESA can further improve the thermal capability and mechanical properties from the previously proposed high-entropy alloys.
