Abstract: A valve for limiting differential pressure applied to a downhole tool includes a housing and a movable piston/mandrel assembly therein. In a closed position, drilling mud or other fluid may be communicated through a central bore of the valve to the tool. When the differential pressure between the central bore and the wellbore exceeds a first predetermined value, the piston/mandrel assembly moves from a first position obstructing one or more relief ports to a second position not obstructing them, thereby providing a fluid path from the central bore of the valve to the wellbore bypassing the tool and relieving the differential pressure thereacross. When the differential pressure decreases to less than another preselected value, the piston/mandrel assembly returns to its original position again obstructing the relief ports. A trigger mechanism is provided to allow more precise control and separation of the preselected differential pressure values.

Contaminants such as water or brine, metallic particulates and ionic or organic materials frequently occur in a wellbore being prepared for RF heating, or in an RF antenna installed in the wellbore. Prior to applying RF electrical energy to the formation, the antenna is decontaminated by circulating a preconditioning fluid through the antenna and recovering a spent fluid for treating and recycle. Decontamination is continued while the spent fluid from the antenna includes, but not limited to, water, metallic particles, ionic species, organic compounds contaminants, etc. An operational power level of radio frequency electrical energy is then applied to the decontaminated antenna for providing thermal energy to the hydrocarbon-bearing formation.

Abstract: This disclosure describes formulations and methods for remediating subterranean-formed metal-polymer complexes in wells in subterranean formations. In one embodiment, the method includes injecting a metal-polymer complex remediation mixture containing a metal complexing agent into a subterranean formation adjacent to a well at a pressure below the fracture pressure of the formation. A sufficient contact time is allowed and then the metal-polymer complex remediation mixture is pumped from the subsurface. This has been shown to remediate polymer-containing, subterranean-formed metal-polymer complexes in shale formations. Without being held to a particular theory it appears that the metal complexing agent is forming metal complexes with the metals in the complexes, and particularly divalent metal ions. This removal of naturally occurring metals may be un-crosslinking and causing the metal-polymer complexes to go into solution, thereby removing the blockages caused by the metal-polymer complexes.

Abstract: Monitoring and diagnosing completion during hydraulic fracturing operations provides insights into the fracture geometry, inter-well frac hits and connectivity. Conventional monitoring methods (microseismic, borehole gauges, tracers, etc.) can provide a range of information about the stimulated rock volume but may often be limited in detail or clouded by uncertainty. Utilization of DAS as a fracture monitoring tool is growing, however most of the applications have been limited to acoustic frequency bands of the DAS recorded signal. In this paper, we demonstrate some examples of using the low-frequency band of Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS) signal to constrain hydraulic fracture geometry. DAS data were acquired in both offset horizontal and vertical monitor wells. In horizontal wells, DAS data records formation strain perturbation due to fracture propagation. Events like fracture opening and closing, stress shadow creation and relaxation, ball seat and plug isolation can be clearly identified.

Abstract: A method includes drawing a fluid into a flow control assembly coupled to a completion string positioned within a wellbore, the flow control assembly including a first fluidic device and a second fluidic device, where the first and second fluidic devices exhibit different flow characteristics. A flow condition of the fluid circulating through the first and second fluidic devices is measured with a plurality of fluid sensors, and a water cut of the fluid is estimated based on the flow condition measured by the plurality of fluid sensors.

Abstract: System and methods for downhole fluid analysis are provided. Measurements are obtained from one or more downhole sensors along a current section of wellbore within a subsurface formation. The measurements obtained from the one or more downhole sensors are transformed into principal spectroscopy component (PSC) data. At least one fluid composition or property is estimated for the current section of the wellbore, based on the PSC data and a fluid analysis model. The fluid analysis model is refined for one or more subsequent sections of the wellbore within the subsurface formation, based at least partly on the fluid composition or property estimated for the current section of the wellbore.

Abstract: A technique facilitates monitoring of a multiphase fluid flow. The fluid flow is directed through a choke valve comprising a choke actuation system which controls a flow rate of the fluid passing through the choke valve. The choke valve also comprises a velocity reduction area which is created by a choke gallery. The choke gallery reduces the velocity of the fluid flow to encourage separation of phases of the multiphase fluid. A sensor is positioned along the gallery at a desired region to monitor a property of at least one separated phase of the multiphase fluid. For example, the sensor may be positioned proximate a bottom of the choke gallery to monitor a property related to a water phase which separates and transitions to the bottom due to its greater density.
