Abstract: A radial shaft seal has an elastomeric sealing lip with an inner side facing a shaft to be sealed. The sealing lip has a first circumferential ring arranged at the inner side and resting against the shaft to seal a medium side from an air side. Return conveying elements are arranged circumferentially about the sealing lip at the inner side and at a side of the first circumferential ring facing the air side. They return leakage medium, independent of a rotational direction of the shaft, to the medium side. A second circumferential ring at the inner side is positioned at a side of the return conveying elements facing the air side. The first circumferential ring is an elevation with depressions, also formed as elevations, distributed circumferentially thereabout. The depressions extend toward the second circumferential ring and are positioned, respectively, between two of the return conveying elements neighboring each other.

Abstract: A mechanical seal has a first sealing ring with sliding surface contacting a second sealing ring to form a sealing gap. An elastically deformable membrane is connected to the first sealing ring at a connecting location and covers an end face of the first sealing ring. The membrane has a side that is facing a medium space to be sealed and is loaded by pressure in the medium space. The membrane has a cone section adjoining the connecting location. The cone section, in an unloaded state, has an axial spacing to the end face of the first sealing ring such that the cone section by elastic deformation contacts more or less, as a function of the pressure in the medium space, the end face of the first sealing ring so that a ratio between a gap-opening force and a gap-closing force is adjusted at the sealing gap.

A first section of pipe is provided having a straight, pre-formed socket with an internal diameter and with an end opening having enough clearance to allow a mating spigot section having a given external diameter to be inserted into the socket end opening. After the spigot end is inserted to a given depth, the socket is heated sufficiently so that the internal diameter of the socket end comes into contact with the external diameter of the spigot end, the molecularly oriented pipe being in a rubbery state and exhibiting a low elastic modulus which allows the socket end to conform tightly to the spigot end external diameter without deforming the spigot end.
