Abstract: A method for manufacturing a MEMS device includes disposing at least one bonding portion having a smaller bonding area in a region where an airtight chamber will be formed, and disposing a metal getter on a bonding surface of the bonding portion. According to this structure, when substrates are bonded to define the airtight chamber, the metal getter is squeezed out of the bonding position due to the larger bonding pressure of the bonding portion with a smaller bonding area. Then, the metal getter is activated to absorb the moisture in the airtight chamber. According to the above process, no additional procedure is needed to remove the moisture in the airtight chamber. Abstract: A device and method of thermal-driven water treatment to fully separate water and solute using a heat source such concentrated solar thermal energy are disclosed herein. The claimed device is integrated to a multi-effect-distillation water treatment system to achieve high energy efficiency and 100% water extraction using high temperature solar thermal energy. In the disclosed water treatment system, water for reclamation is sprayed into droplets which fall into hot, dry air and creates very effective convective heat transfer between water droplets and hot airflow. During the heat transfer process, water is vaporized for pure water collection while the crystallized solute from the reclamation water to the bottom for collection.

Abstract: Methods for synthesizing macroscale 3D heteroatom-doped carbon nanotube materials (such as boron doped carbon nanotube materials) and compositions thereof. Macroscopic quantities of three-dimensionally networked heteroatom-doped carbon nanotube materials are directly grown using an aerosol-assisted chemical vapor deposition method. The porous heteroatom-doped carbon nanotube material is created by doping of heteroatoms (such as boron) in the nanotube lattice during growth, which influences the creation of elbow joints and branching of nanotubes leading to the three dimensional super-structure. The super-hydrophobic heteroatom-doped carbon nanotube sponge is strongly oleophilic and can soak up large quantities of organic solvents and oil. The trapped oil can be burnt off and the heteroatom-doped carbon nanotube material can be used repeatedly as an oil removal scaffold.

Abstract: A technique for wastewater treatment involves ensuring that all paths for wastewater must pass through at least one porous microbial support to go from the inlet to the outlet, and allowing a biofilm to grow on the porous microbial support under microaerobic conditions (concentration of oxygen between 0.05 and 0.35 mg/L). The biofilm formed comprises a population of anaerobic microbes for digesting organics in the wastewater including methanogenic microbes, and an aerobic methanotrophic and heterotrophic population that catabolizes methane from the methanogenic microbes, and oxygen from the injector, to produce heat. The support may be an electrode, and the technique is applied in a microbial electrolysis cell, with substantial COD removal rates.
