Abstract: Wastewater containing a significant level of dissolved readily biodegradable organic compounds matter, such as short-chain fatty acids, and ammonia can be efficiently treated to remove most or all of the organic compounds and the ammonia, with the production of microbial storage compounds such as polyhydroxylkanoates, by (i) subjecting the wastewater storage compound-accumulating microorganisms (SCAM) in the presence of oxygen, (ii) subjecting at least part of the resulting partly treated wastewater to ammonia-oxidising microorganisms (AOM) in the presence of oxygen and (iii) feeding a gas containing molecular carbon dioxide produced during step (ii) to step (i) so as to lower the pH in step (i).

Abstract: In a liquid treatment system with an inlet and an outlet defining a liquid flow direction from the inlet to the outlet, a liquid treatment zone is arranged between the inlet and the outlet. The liquid treatment zone includes ultraviolet radiators arranged to radiate ultraviolet radiation into a liquid flowing through the treatment zone. A first transition zone downstream of the inlet and a second transition zone upstream of the outlet, adapt the cross section of the inlet to the cross section of the treatment zone, and the cross section of the treatment zone to the cross section of the outlet, respectively. The inlet, the transition zones, the treatment zone and the outlet confine the liquid flow in a closed channel, so greater durability of the radiators and the channel wall material is achieved by providing a degassing between the inlet and the treatment zone at the top of the channel.

Abstract: A closed system and method for efficient separation, drying, pasteurization and disposal of water treatment facility sludge effluent substantially reduces its water content, and thereby its volume and weight. A separator directs influent sludge into hydrocyclones that spin the sludge, separating most of the water into an upper chamber and dropping the solids into a lower chamber surrounded by an oil bath shell which heats and denatures the solids. Forced air through a venturi creates a vacuum in the lower chamber, causing much of the remaining water to vaporize and drawing the solids out onto a conveyor. Another oil bath shell surrounding the conveyor further heats the solids, while heated air forced across the solids further dries them while evacuating the vapor. The resulting dried sludge cake contains as little as ten (10%) percent water, while the closed system deters escape of odors and corrosive vapors.
