The laparoscopic instrument includes a shaft that does not exceed 1.6 mm in diameter. The shaft has a beveled end and is inserted into an abdomen similar to the placement of a needle, without use of a scalpel. Operating instruments are introduced into the abdomen through the umbilical port using a docking device, and are then docked to the beveled end of the shaft after the shaft is introduced through the abdomen. Multiple types of operating instruments can be placed on the beveled end of the shaft during the surgical procedure. Each operating instrument is docked with a holster during introduction into and withdrawal from the umbilical port and is removed from the holster only when in use. When removed from the holster it is locked to the shaft and cannot be dropped.Type: ApplicationFiled: April 10, 2019Publication date: August 1, 2019Applicant: University of South FloridaInventors: Stuart Hart, Susana Lai-Yuen, Erin Moree, James Doulgeris, Benjamin Taylor Nelson, Grahm Roach, Brandon Kruse

Publication number: 20190231381Abstract: A compact ultrasonic transducer for an ultrasonic surgical instrument includes a proximal casing defining a hollow interior and a piezoelectric rod array including a plurality of piezoelectric rods radially spaced-apart from one another and arranged in a longitudinally-oriented direction. The piezoelectric rod array is disposed within the hollow interior. The compact ultrasonic transducer further includes a distal horn including a distal connector configured to engage a waveguide. The distal horn is configured to engage the proximal casing to enclose the piezoelectric rod array within the hollow interior. An ultrasonic surgical instrument including the compact ultrasonic transducer is also provided.Type: ApplicationFiled: January 29, 2018Publication date: August 1, 2019Inventor: Matthew S. Cowley

Publication number: 20190231383Abstract: An ultrasound transducer includes: a drive unit including a piezoelectric device; a proximal end block; and a distal end block. The distal end block includes a first portion, a supported portion, a second portion, and a third portion. The distal end block is configured such that a position of a boundary between the second portion and the third portion corresponds to or substantially corresponds to an antinode of the ultrasonic vibration while the piezoelectric device generates the ultrasonic vibration, and the ultrasonic vibration is being propagated to the proximal end block, the first portion, the second portion, and the third portion. A resonance frequency of the ultrasonic vibration differs according to a position of the boundary between the second portion and the third portion under a condition that a distance from the supported portion to a distal end of the third portion along the longitudinal axis is constant.Type: ApplicationFiled: April 12, 2019Publication date: August 1, 2019Applicant: OLYMPUS CORPORATIONInventor: Yukihiko SHIMAMURA

Publication number: 20190231384Abstract: An ultrasonic horn for an ultrasonic transducer assembly of an ultrasonic surgical instrument includes a body and a nose. The body defines a tubular configuration having a hollow interior and a plurality of slots therethrough extending into the hollow interior. The nose extends distally from the body. The body defines a proximal connector configured to enable the body to be secured to a piezoelectric stack and the nose defines a distal connector configured to enable the nose to be engaged with a waveguide for transmission of ultrasonic energy produced by the piezoelectric stack to the waveguide.Type: ApplicationFiled: January 29, 2018Publication date: August 1, 2019Inventor: MATTHEW S. Publication number: 20190231386Abstract: A biopsy guide for use in guiding a needle in a transperineal prostate biopsy procedure. The biopsy guide may include a guide member and a displacement member. The guide member may operably couple with the transrectal probe and include a guide body including a distal end, a proximal end, a length, a first guide member extending the length, and a second guide member extending the length, wherein a portion of the first and second guide members overhangs the transrectal probe when coupled thereto. The displacement member may be supported by the guide member and may include a central vertically extending member having a plurality of needle receiving ports therein, and a planar member coupled to the central vertically extending member and having a planar bottom surface that is configured to slide on the first and second planar top surfaces of the first and second guide members, respectively.Type: ApplicationFiled: April 8, 2019Publication date: August 1, 2019Applicant: Corbin Clinical Resources, LLCInventor: Matthew J. Publication number: 20190231387Abstract: A method of performing a transperineal biopsy procedure including sliding a displacement member of a biopsy guide relative to a guide member of the biopsy guide such that the displacement member is proximate the perineal access site of the patient. The guide member may be secured to the ultrasound probe, and the guide member may include a pair of guide rails each having a planar top surface. The displacement member may include a platform having a planar bottom surface and at least one needle receiving port for guiding a needle, wherein the planar bottom surface of the platform opposes the planar top surfaces of the pair of guide rails during the sliding of the displacement member relative to the guide member. The method may further include inserting a needle into the perineal access site of the patient.Type: ApplicationFiled: April 8, 2019Publication date: August 1, 2019Applicant: Corbin Clinical Resources, LLCInventor: Matthew J.
