Abstract: An apparatus and method of using a pipette with pipette tip columns were developed in which a pipette is operated with the pipette tip columns inserted into the wells of a microplate. In this configuration the pipette is free standing and is essentially perpendicular to the microplate. The pipette is hand-held when transferring between positions, e.g., between operation steps that take place in different rows of wells. The open lower ends of the pipette tip column are approximately centered within the plate well. The columns and plate are designed in such a way that the open lower ends of the pipette tip columns are in contact with liquid in the plate well however, the columns do not seal on the well bottom, preventing flow in and out of the column. The pipette contains the appropriate firmware and software to control flow for all steps of pipette tip column operation. In some embodiments, cells are purified from biological samples.

Abstract: Analysis devices have structural features for capturing biological fluid samples and presenting them in a way allowing imaging of components. The analysis devices may include a capillary channel coupled to an inlet for receiving the biological sample. The capillary channel allows the sample to be drawn in by capillary force and form the suspension. It may have a precise and uniform height of, e.g., about 5 and 30 micrometers. For various cell types, height allows a single layer of unstacked cells to be presented for easy imaging at a single depth of focus. In certain embodiments, the analysis devices include a reservoir for initially holding the biological sample taken from a patient such as by drawing blood from a wound.

Abstract: Surface treatment of a tubular surface defining an axis extending from a first surface end to a second surface end includes partially surrounding the tubular surface, at a first position, with a first set of treating units, with the treating units arranged in a first arcuate array. Furthermore, each treating unit is configured to include a plurality of first applicator heads. In some examples, a position of each of the plurality of first applicator heads is determined relative to the tubular surface. The first set of treating units is moved from the first position towards a second position. In one non-limiting example, each of the plurality of first applicator heads is independently controlled to selectively apply a first treatment as the first set of treating units moves from the first position towards the second position.

Abstract: A filtering apparatus formed by a plurality of channel systems. Each of the channel systems include an inlet port formed on an inlet side of the plate; no more than one outlet port formed on an outlet side of the plate; and a channel formed in the plate, the channel coupled to the inlet port and to the outlet port, wherein the ratio of the product of the capture area of the inlet ports of a channel system with the first transmissivity associated with the inlet ports to the product of the capture area of the outlet ports of a channel system with the second transmissivity associated with the outlet ports is greater than one. The channel system is configured to interact with objects of interest on a scale which is smaller than a value several orders of magnitude larger than the mean free path of an object of interest. Some plate embodiments are configured to interact with particles, such as air molecules, water molecules, or aerosols.

Abstract: The disclosure relates to integrated modules for Synchronized Array of Vibration Actuators (FIG. 125A). The modules provide physical interface, power and communication interfaces. Each module may include vibration actuators (FIG. 123A) which can be precisely attached and aligned to the module housing, a microcontroller or other microprocessor, and one or more sensors for closed loop control of actuators (FIG. 126G). Interleaved pairs of ERMs having a center of mass in the same plane eliminate parasitic torque. A single module can produce a vibration force that rotates at a specific frequency and magnitude, which on its own could cancel out some types of periodic vibrations (FIG. 125B). Two modules paired together and counter-rotating with respect to each other can produce a directional vibration at a specific frequency and magnitude, which could prove even more useful for canceling out a vibration. Such modules are also employed to produce beating patterns (FIGS. 131-133).

The method includes a) measuring the majority free charge carrier concentration in an area of each wafer; calculating the thermal donor concentration in the area of each wafer, on the basis of the majority free charge carrier concentration; calculating the charge carrier lifetime limited by the thermal donors in the area of each wafer, on the basis of the thermal donor concentration; determining a bulk lifetime value for the charge carriers in each wafer on the basis of the lifetime limited by the thermal donors; comparing the bulk lifetime value or a normalised bulk lifetime value with a threshold value; and discarding the wafer when the bulk lifetime value or the normalised bulk lifetime value is lower than the threshold value.
