  • Patent number: 10837234
Abstract: A drilling apparatus may alter a direction of travel of a drill bit as it forms a borehole in the earth by furnishing the borehole with a cross-sectional shape that urges the drill bit in a radial direction. Such a cross-sectional shape may comprise two circular arcs, one larger than the apparatus and one smaller. The apparatus may be urged away from the smaller circular arc and into the open space provided by the larger circular arc. Such an apparatus may comprise an axial body and a cutting element extendable in a single radial direction from an exterior of the axial body. Extension of the cutting element may allow it to engage and degrade an inner wall of the borehole. An abrasion-resistant gauge pad protruding from the exterior of the body may ride against the borehole wall and urge the body radially.

  • Patent number: 10837246
Abstract: This system invention relates to the use of short hop communications to transfer data between two modules inside a well. A system deployed in a well permanently or semi-permanently collects data from downhole parameters such as pressure, temperature, vibration, flow and fluid identification and stores the information in the system memory. The receiver module is deployed in the well via slick line, electric line or coil tubing with the purpose of retrieving the data from the system memory by interfacing with the downhole module via wireless short hop communications. The receiver module can also send commands into the downhole module to change its data collection parameters. Upon completion of the data transfer, the collector is returned to the surface where the data is again wirelessly transferred to a processing system such as a Personal Computer.

Abstract: A shaped charge comprising a case, a liner positioned within the case, and an explosive filled within the case. The liner is shaped with a subtended angle ranging from 100° to 120° about an apex, a radius, and an aspect ratio such that a jet formed with the explosive creates an entrance hole in a well casing. The jet creates a perforation tunnel in a hydrocarbon formation, wherein a diameter of the jet, a diameter of the entrance hole diameter, and a width and length of the perforation tunnel are substantially constant and unaffected with changes in design and environmental factors such as a thickness and composition of the well casing, position of the charge in the perforating gun, position of the perforating gun in the well casing, a water gap in the wellbore casing, and type of the hydrocarbon formation.

Abstract: A device and a method for evaluating a gas-water two-phase flow fracture conductivity of a fractured shale. The device includes a seepage system, an injection system, a data collecting and processing system and a three-axis shale core holder, wherein the seepage system is subjected to two stages including a water injection stage and a gas flooding stage. When using the device, firstly the initial permeability and initial mass of the shale sample are determined; the water influx test is performed by injecting water to the shale sample until flow rate of the water discharged from the shale core is stable, then the water injection is ended. After the drying device is installed, the shale sample is subjected to gas flooding, and the aqueous fracturing fluid discharged by the gas flooding is collected until the flow meter determines that the gas volume is stable, and then the gas flooding is ended.
