Abstract: An autonomous, artificial bait aims to simulate the movements of natural baits. The autonomous bait may be designed to appear as a natural bait such as a crawfish, shrimp, worm, or minnow. The autonomous bait includes a cavity in which a gas producing engine may be received. The gas producing engine includes a gas producing agent that produces gas when it interacts with water. That way, when water enters the gas producing engine, gas may be produced that interacts with the autonomous bait to cause movement of the bait that simulates the movements of a natural bait it aims to imitate.

Abstract: An insect trap includes a combination of one or more components used to classify the insect according to a genus and species. The trap includes an imaging device, a digital microphone, and passive infrared sensors at the entrance of the trap to sense wing-beat frequencies and size of the insect (to identify entry of a mosquito). A lamb-skin membrane, filled with an insect attractant such as carbon dioxide mixed with gas air inside, mimics human skin so that the insect can rest on the membrane and even pierce the membrane as if a blood meal is available. An imaging device such as a passive infrared sensor or a camera gathers image data of the insect. The insect may be a mosquito.

Abstract: Polyamines are water-soluble polyelectrolytes with the amino groups that can be used to attach the polymers onto functional surfaces of fibrous materials. In addition, polyamines can be readily modified by (super)nucleophilic groups such as (alkyl)aminopyridines that enhance the polymer's ability to promote hydrolysis of organophosphorous chemical warfare agents. Furthermore, attachment of hydantoin moieties augments the number of the imide, amide, or amine groups on the polyamine's chain, which provides oxidizing properties to the resulting modified polyamine after halogenation. In one aspect, disclosed herein are polyamines with side chains modified to contain both (4-aminopyridine, APy) and 5-(4-hydroxybenzylidene)hydantoin (HBH) functionalities with enhanced content of the active bromine. Viricidal activity of the APy- and HBH-modified polyallylamine against human coronavirus (type 229E) was tested both in solution and on nylon-cotton fabric.

This method includes a step for adding a preparation oil to an edible oil and fat, and is such that: the preparation oil is a substance that has been subjected, in a step for refining a crude raw oil obtained from olives serving as an oilseed raw material, to (1) an optionally implemented neutralization step, (2) an optionally implemented bleaching step, and (3) an optionally implemented deodorization step in the stated order, without a degumming step having been implemented, where at least one of the (2) bleaching step and the (3) deodorization step is implemented; and an absorbance difference of the preparation oil is 0.05 or more, the absorbance difference being obtained by subtracting the absorbance at a wavelength of 750 nm from the absorbance at a wavelength of 660 nm, with isooctane used as a control.

Abstract: A Clean in Place assembly for a food processor includes a self-cleaning valve assembly, wherein the self-cleaning valve assembly is in fluid communication with a food flow path in the food processor. The self-cleaning valve assembly includes a valve receiving chamber and valve configured to selectively fluidly connect a food flow path inlet port to a food flow path outlet port; fluidly connect the food flow path inlet port to a multivalent port; and fluidly connect a treating solution to a dead space between the valve and the valve receiving cavity. Food product can be selectively drained or retained in food flow path, wherein the self-cleaning valve can be continuously or intermittently exposed to a treating solution for treating non-food flow path portions of the self-cleaning valve assembly.

Abstract: This disclosure provides a technology for developing alternative protein sources for use in industrial food production. The technology mines natural sources by a process that is done partly in silico. Instead of sampling and testing a vast library of compounds, machine learning and implementation narrows the field of functional candidates by predictive modeling based on known protein structure. Candidate proteins that are selected by this analysis are then produced and screened in a high-throughput manner by recombinant expression and testing to determine whether they have a target function. Multiple cycles of the machine learning, database mining, expression and testing are done to yield potential ingredients suitable for assessment as part of a commercial food product.
