Abstract: This disclosure relates to the inspection of train wheels while mounted on a train that is moving on a railroad track. A magnetostrictive EMAT transducer is built using an RF Coil, a static biasing magnetic field, and a strip of highly magnetostrictive material. This magnetostrictive EMAT transducer is subsequently attached to a rail on the track so the wheel tread of the moving train can contact and apply downward pressure on the magnetostrictive EMAT transducer. A mechanism under the transducer provides enough counterforce to pressure-couple the transducer with the tread of the wheel. Once the transducer is ultrasonically coupled with the wheel, an ultrasonic instrument sends a pulse to the transducer generating a Shear Horizontal wave that travels circumferentially following the tread body. The Shear Horizontal wave generated with this magnetostrictive strip EMAT transducer penetrates deep into the wheel tread and permits detection of both surface and internal defects.

Abstract: A method for calibrating a sensor of a sensor system. A plurality of sensors structurally identical to the sensor of the sensor system and a general sensor model are provided. An inner optimization step is subsequently carried out for each of the structurally identical sensors. During the inner optimization step, a sensor-specific sensor model is initialized using the general sensor model and a sensor-specific model parameter is subsequently optimized based on measured data of the sensor. The sensor-specific sensor model is adapted with the aid of the sensor-specific model parameter. An outer optimization step is then carried out. In this step, the sensor-specific sensor models adapted for each sensor are used in order to optimize the general sensor model. The general sensor model is stored in a memory of the sensor system.

Abstract: A water level detection method via video recognition, includes steps of obtaining an image of a water level gauge from a camera; wherein the water level gauge includes multiple two-dimensional barcodes; and determining a water level according to the two-dimensional barcodes. When a body of water partly covers the water level gauge, the body of water would cover some of the two-dimensional barcodes, leaving the rest of visible two-dimensional barcodes corresponding to the water level. When the water is clear, the two-dimensional barcodes underwater would be visible yet at the same time indecipherable due to distorted barcode scales. This way, the present invention is able to avoid accidentally counting two-dimensional barcodes underwater, and thus more accurately and robustly detect water levels.

Abstract: A single-barometer device, a method for fall detection and a system are provided. The single-barometer device worn on a user is used to measure multiple barometric values continuously by a barometer inside the device. The barometric values are stored in a memory of the single-barometer device. When a current barometric value is produced, the current barometric value is compared with a previous barometric value retrieved from the memory. A barometric difference can be obtained. The barometric difference is then compared with a threshold, and a comparison result is used to determine whether or not a fall event is present. The fall event is confirmed if the barometric difference is larger than the threshold. Further, an acceleration change obtained by an accelerometer inside the single-barometer device can be used to reconfirm the fall event.

Abstract: Methods and apparatuses for indicating the presence of a threshold directional differential pressure between separated adjacent spaces. An inclined conduit contains at least one movable element that indicates whether the pressure difference between the two spaces is at least as high as a threshold pressure difference. The apparatus may include an on-board pitch indicator and a roll indicator which are used together to calibrate the apparatus and its installation. The apparatus may provide only one or more discrete number of pressure difference set points and be non-adjustable once installed. The inclined conduit may be non-rotatable relative to the baseplate, and the baseplate may be rotatable to change threshold pressure difference set points. The apparatus may provide a tamper-resistant indication of whether a threshold pressure differential is present.

Abstract: An optical test system and corresponding method disclosed herein provides highly accurate test data for both sides of a lens simultaneously and efficiently to analyze the surface topography and/or geometric parameters of a lens or lens system. More particularly, the optical test system and corresponding method moves the lens in test plane to align a plurality of points of a test pattern on a lens surface with a vertical axis while probes aligned with the vertical axis and on opposing sides of the lens simultaneously collect wavelength-specific data for both lens surfaces. The optical test system uses the collected wavelength-specific data to produce a surface topography and/or the associated lens geometric parameters for each lens surface.

Abstract: An optical fiber measurement system includes an optical time-domain reflectometer, a wavelength division multiplexer, and a signal generator. The signal generator sends a signal light ray to the wavelength division multiplexer. The optical time-domain reflectometer sends two measurement light rays whose wavelengths are respectively longer than and shorter than a wavelength of the signal light ray to the wavelength division multiplexer. The wavelength division multiplexer combines the two measurement light rays and the signal light ray, sends a combined light ray to an optical fiber, and sends a light ray returned by the optical fiber to the optical time-domain reflectometer, so that the optical time-domain reflectometer determines performance of the optical fiber based on the returned light ray.
