Abstract: An electronic device may include a display panel configured to produce light and a lens assembly that receives the light from the display panel. The lens assembly may be a catadioptric lens assembly with a partially reflective layer, lens element, quarter wave plate, and reflective polarizer. Some of the light emitted by the display panel may be reflected by the catadioptric lens assembly away from the catadioptric lens assembly. A supplemental mirror may be used to reflect this light back towards the catadioptric lens assembly. The supplemental mirror may increase the field-of-view of images viewable through the catadioptric lens assembly. The supplemental mirror may have a dithered upper surface or a phase-shift mask.

Abstract: Blazed diffraction gratings provide optical elements in head-mounted display systems to, e.g., incouple light into or out-couple light out of a waveguide. These blazed diffraction gratings may be configured to have reduced polarization sensitivity. Such gratings may, for example, incouple or outcouple light of different polarizations with similar level of efficiency. The blazed diffraction gratings and waveguides may be formed in a high refractive index substrate such as lithium niobate. In some implementations, the blazed diffraction gratings may include diffractive features having a feature height of 40 nm to 120 nm, for example, 80 nm. The diffractive features may be etched into the high index substrate, e.g., lithium niobate.

Abstract: Disclosed herein is an apparatus and method for hybrid backlighting of display screens. The apparatus comprises an external light unit and an internal light unit, both configured to illuminate the display screen using light from external and internal light sources, respectively. A secondary optical element within the apparatus ensures efficient and homogeneous light distribution across the display screen. The external light unit features a port adaptable to various light delivery systems, such as solar light collectors or electric light sources. A dimmer element and a sensor enable control and measurement of light intensity and spectral composition. The method involves obtaining light data from external sources, determining a hybrid lighting configuration, and adjusting filtering and light configurations accordingly.

Abstract: A backlight module and a liquid crystal display device are provided. The backlight module includes a light-emitting assembly, an optical processing assembly and a support structure located between the light-emitting assembly and the optical processing assembly and connected to the light-emitting assembly. The support structure includes a base and a support member, the base being fixedly connected to the light-emitting assembly. The support member has a supporting end and a connecting end. The supporting end faces the optical processing assembly. The connecting end and the base form a backout structure configured to cause the connecting end to back out in a direction away from the optical processing assembly in a case where the supporting end is squeezed by the optical processing assembly, so that can eliminate problems caused by stress concentration of an internal support structure when a backlight module is under pressure.
