  • Patent number: 6890407
Abstract: A method and an arrangement for manufacturing calendered paper or board particularly in the on-line manufacturing method. In the method, a base web is formed from a mixture of water and pulp supplied from the headbox and the web is dried by removing water over the press section and over the dryer section by heating. The formed web is calendered at least once to modify the surface on at least one of its sides. Before calendering the cross-direction thickness profile of the web is standardized and calendering is carried out by means of a long-nip calender, whereby good surface quality is obtained without losing the bulk or stiffness of the web.

  • Patent number: 6712930
Abstract: Tissue paper is calendered in at least one calendering nip. The tissue paper is calendered in at least one soft, long calendering nip. By belt calendering a high crêping effect is achieved when a so-called post-nip contact is used. With post-nip contact, the web and the belt are in contact with the thermo roll over a distance of 10-200 mm after the nip, whereby the belt tension presses the web against the surface of the thermo roll, and hereby the belt expands in the nip, and when it is then restored it will crêpe the paper. In this manner a soft tissue paper with maximum bulkiness is brought about. The belt tension used in the belt calender is 1-10 kN/m.

  • Patent number: 6666134
Abstract: A feedback control system for use in a press machine is adapted to monitor and adjust the clearance between the gib and slide. A connection bolt provides a connection between the gib and frame upright. A thermal applicator selectively heats and/or cools the connection bolt to induce a controlled deformation of the bolt, namely, an expansion and/or contraction, respectively. In one form, a heat-induced elongation of the bolt along its longitudinal dimension actuates a corresponding displacement of the gib towards the slide to regulate the spatial relationship therebetween. A sensor provides a measure of any possible clearance between the gib and slide. The clearance measurement is compared to allowable reference clearance data. A controller controls the heating and/or cooling action in accordance with the comparison results, thereby controllably moving the gib. The gib may be selectively displaced to optionally effectuate a partial or full close-out of the existing clearance.

Abstract: Method for influencing relevant quality parameters of a rolling strip, particularly the profile or flatness of the rolling strip, in a roll stand with rolls, by adjusting the crownings of the rolls, i.e., the surface geometry of the rolls in the longitudinal direction of the rolls, wherein the crowning of the rolls is adjusted by an adjustable cooling of the rolls or of their surfaces in longitudinal direction of the rolls. The cooling of the rolls is adjusted by a controller (1) as a function of the actual value (pactual) of the crowning and a predetermined setpoint value (psetpoint) of the crowning.

  • Patent number: 6401355
Abstract: A method and apparatus for manufacturing calendered paper in which the paper is calendered after drying. The paper is dried (D) sown to a moisture lower that the target moisture of calendering. The paper is run via wetting (1) to calendering, wherein at least one of the surface layer of the paper is wetted in the wetting in such that the moistening water is absorbed in the surface layer of the paper while at lest the central part remains substantially dry. From the paper wetted at least on one of its sides, gradient paper is manufactured by means of gradient calendering by restricting the paper-molding effect of the calender to the wetted surface layer in such a way that at least the paper is elastically restored substantially in its original state, whereafter the obtained gradient paper is reeled.

  • Patent number: 6397739
Abstract: A calendering method and calender in which a web material is passed through a calender, the calender nip being defined between a heatable hard roll and an endless, flexible and substantially non-compressible calendering belt. The heatable roll is heated in order to plasticize the surface layer of the web and the web is brought into contact with the heatable roll before the calendering of the web. After the preliminary contact of the web with the heatable roll a press treatment proper is applied to the web to be calendered in two stages. First a deformation is produced in the web in a press stage, after that the deformation that was produced is allowed to be reversed partially in a reversing stage and then a new deformation is produced in the web by pressing the web again in a finishing stage.

Abstract: In a roll nip (5) formed between a shoe press roll (1) having a concave, plane or slightly convex press shoe (11), a flexible jacket (15) and a hot counter roll (3), the jacket (15) may be damaged by the heat from the counter roll (3) upon a web break. To avoid this, the roll nip (5) is opened by removing one of the press shoe (11) and the hot counter roll (3) from the other, so that the jacket (15) resumes a generally cylindrical shape having an arched portion located across the shoe (11). Then, a force is applied inside the roll jacket (15), directed away from the roll nip (5), to tension the roll jacket (15) over the leading edge and the trailing edge of the press shoe (11), so as to reduce the height of arch of the arched portion over the shoe (11) sufficiently to ensure removal of the jacket (15) from contact with the hot counter roll (3). Preferably, the force against the inside of the jacket is applied by means of a tensioning shoe (61).

  • Patent number: 6363845
Abstract: According to a method of transferring a sheet through a working apparatus, a first sheet is moved by feed rolls partially into a working area of the working apparatus, which is followed by moving a second sheet by the same feed rolls to allow the leading end of the second sheet to be brought into abutment with the trailing end of its preceding first sheet and then to push the first sheet to a predetermined position within the working area. After the first sheet is thus placed and the second sheet is moved back out of the working area, the apparatus is operated to work the first sheet, for example, by pressing. The second sheet is moved forward into abutment with the trailing end of the worked first sheet and moved further while pushing the first sheet toward delivery rolls of the apparatus, which then removes the first sheet out of the working area of the apparatus. Such steps of operation is repeated to transfer a series of sheets successively through the working apparatus.

Abstract: Reformation techniques and apparatus. Typically employed to permit separate printing and finishing of multiple webs of paper, these techniques and apparatus utilize or provide heat and, in some cases, initial tension, to change dimensions (including repeat length) of the paper of one or more webs. Webs dimensionally-reformed in accordance with the techniques typically do not require subsequent variation of tension to maintain appropriate dimension, permitting any such tension variation to occur solely to enhance other aspects of the finishing processes.

  • Patent number: 6289797
Abstract: Method in calendering of a paper web in which the paper web is conveyed through a calendering nip formed by two calender rolls, at least one of which is a soft-faced roll having a coating of a resilient or polymeric material, or over which a belt of resilient or polymeric material is directed and passed through the nip. The profile of the calendering nip is controlled to compensate for defects in the web entering the calender. The profile control is accomplished by changing the diameter of the soft-faced roll zonewise by a profile control device arranged inside the body and performing temperature profiling. The profile control device include temperature control elements such as heating elements located in zones for heating a heat transfer medium such as air supplied into the body.

  • Patent number: 6287424
Abstract: A paperboard product having at least one layer of bleached or semi-bleached pulp and having improved smoothness and reduced bulk loss. For paperboard having sizing without pigment, the smoothness on the printed side as measured by the Parker test is better (lower) than 6.5 when measured using a pressure of 10 kgf/cm2 while the smoothness measured by the Hagerty/Sheffield test is not below 280 Sheffield units. For paperboard having sizing with pigment, the Parker smoothness is less than 5.0 and the Hagerty/Sheffield smoothness is not less than 180 Sheffield units. The web is finished by applying temperature and moisture gradients to the web and then smoothing the web surface using extended nip calendering. The surface of the calendering roll is maintained at a temperature of 250-400° F. Prior to entering the extended nip, the web surface is moisturized using steam showers. The nipload applied in the heated extended nip is preferably in the range of 300 to 2,500 pli.
