  • Patent number: 4653395
Abstract: Method and apparatus in the calendering of a web in a calender comprising a calender stack including at least two calender rolls situated substantially one over the other defining at least one calendering nip between them in which the web to be calendered is pressed at a suitable linear load, and wherein the outer rolls of the stack are provided with internal apparatus for varying or adjusting the roll crowns. The mantle of one or both of the calender rolls defining a calendering nip is heated to produce in the web passing through the nip a significant temperature differential in the thickness direction of the web between its interior portion and its surface layers and/or between its opposite surface layers. In this manner, the mechanical calendering work normally a function of the linear loading of the calender rolls is compensated for by the temperature gradient produced by the temperature differential which acts on the plastic properties of the web.

  • Patent number: 4653396
Abstract: The present invention is directed toward a controller for controlling local calender roll diameters by directing temperature controlled fluid against selected slices of a rotating calender roll. The calender roll has a diameter which responds to changes in temperature. Therefore, thermal expansion or contraction, resulting from localized heating or cooling of the calender roll by the temperature controlled fluid, corrects local non-uniformities in the spacing between cooperating calender rolls. The invention conserves energy by recirculating the temperature controlled air.

  • Patent number: 4635861
Abstract: A roller mill, in which the milling rollers are pressed together with high pressures, has a fluidic device for imparting the respective pressure. This fluidic device comprises piston-cylinder units and a pressure line for the fluid. In order to obtain a skewing of at least one roller in dependency upon the pressure exerted by the fluidic device, pressure sensitive means are interposed between the pressure line and a displacing device for the skewing angle. In this way, a pressure signal may be transferred to a converter for converting the pressure into a corresponding displacement stroke. Preferably, at least one roller has a basic camber or crown which corresponds to a pressure within a lower range of the occurring pressures.

  • Patent number: 4625637
Abstract: The roll assembly of a calender has at least one roll with a deformable shell which surrounds a rigid carrier and whose end portions surround discrete antifriction bearings. The intermediate portion of the shell surrounds one or more rows of hydrostatic supporting elements which can be acted upon by adjustable fluid-operated motors to change the shape of the intermediate portion in a plane including the axes of the one roll and the neighboring roll as well as at right angles to such plane. Stresses which are applied to the bearings for the end portions of the shell are monitored by several sensors which transmit signals to a control system to regulate the deformation of the shell in such a way that the stresses upon the bearings are minimized or reduced to zero. This enables the intermediate portion of the shell to undergo deformation which is best suited for optimum treatment of the material passing through the nip of the one roll and the neighboring roll.

The upper belt is driven by at least two rollers, one of which is situated in the dewatering section wherein the upper and lower belts are squeezed and traveling together. The improved drive arrangement provides a more uniformly increasing tension in the belt as it passes through the dewatering section than in such presses heretofore. Further because the lower belt is at least partially driven by its frictional engagement with the upper belt, through the sandwiched slurry, the synchronization of the belt speeds is improved. Further improved control of the belt press performance is provided by means for sensing the speeds of the belts and responsive means for regulating the belt tensioning systems accordingly.

Abstract: Disclosed is an apparatus for controlling the caliper of a web, such as a continuous paper sheet issuing from a nip of a plural-roll device, such as a calender. One or more rolls of the device is subjected to a multiplicity of air jets issuing substantially at constant flow rates but at temperatures which may vary as desired from nozzles spaced lengthwise of the roll.

  • Patent number: 4080888
Abstract: A calender roll is arranged to automatically have the pressure relieved between a pair of pressure rolls when a splice is detected in a moving web. The splice in the web is detected a known distance upstream of the pressure rolls. A counter, related to web travel distance, is activated to cause the temporary relief in the pressure between the rolls as the splice travels therebetween, preventing any damage that would otherwise occur to the moving web and avoiding any production slowdown.

  • Patent number: 4023480
Abstract: An apparatus for controlling a deflection compensating press roll of a rolling mill having a pair of press rolls at least one of which is a deflection compensating roll having a support core, a roll shell rotatably mounted about the core, bearing means disposed between the core and the roll shell adjacent the shell ends, a plurality of support devices engaged between the core and the roll shell to exert forces therebetween and pressure means for pressing the rolls against each other, the control apparatus comprises a frame, a movable member mounted in the frame, means coupled with the support devices and the pressure means and responsive to the forces exerted thereby for exerting a force on the movable member which simulates the forces exerted by the support devices and the pressure means so that the movable member is maintained in an equilibrium position when the forces exerted by the support devices and the pressure means are substantially in equilibrium, means for sensing displacement of the movable member

  • Patent number: 3942434
Abstract: A device for adjusting the roller gap of superimposed rollers of a calender with upwardly and downwardly movable spindles suspended on both sides of the calender which extend through supporting means on lateral ends of roller bearings. Below each supporting means a spindle nut is adjustable relative to the pertaining supporting means. The distance between each spindle nut and the supporting means thereabove is adapted to be sensed. Each supporting means carries a feeler head of a proximity switch and a vertical guiding bar having guided thereon a marker adjustable by the respective spindle nut on the pertaining guiding bar in the longitudinal direction of the pertaining guiding bar.
