  • Patent number: 5975008
Abstract: A clapper assembly includes circular strikers which can be individually rotated so that a new portion of the surface of the striker is presented in the direction of the clapper stroke. A pair of opposing plates located at the end of the clapper bar retain circular, donut-shaped striking elements. Each striker is secured between the plates by a retaining screw through the axis of the striking element. By loosening the screws, the individual strikers may be rotated. Thus, when a portion of the striker becomes worn, it may be loosened and manually rotated to a new position so that a fresh unused area is presented. In addition, the entire clapper assembly may be rotated so that strikers of different compressibility can be interchanged.

  • Patent number: 4941424
Abstract: A sonic alarm device is provided for signalling the opening of a door which is hingedly mounted adjacent the edge on a door frame for swinging movement about an upright hinge axis into and out of a closed position. The door alarm is mounted in the interior of the door. The door alarm comprises a housing for the alarm, an isolator inside of the housing, wherein the isolator supports a sonically activated device. A spring holder is mounted within the isolator, and spring is mounted on the spring holder in a position horizontal to the door. When the door is in a closed position, the spring is pushed back into the interior of the housing; the spring is designed to be released when the door is opened. A hammer actuator is contacted by the spring when the door is opened, and a hammer is struck by the hammer actuator when the door is opened. The hammer then contacts a sonically actuated device to cause the device to produce an audible sound.

  • Patent number: 4677892
Abstract: An improved striker mechanism for percussion instruments such as chimes, bells, drums, and the like, is disclosed. A clapper is mounted on an armature for motion between a rest position and an impact position. A solenoid-permanent magnet set is provided to hold the clapper in its rest position. Energization of the solenoid by a short electrical drive pulse produces a magnetic field in the solenoid core which repels the permanent magnet and drives the clapper to impact a percussion instrument sound-producing surface. The drive pulse is sufficiently short that it does not impede rebound of the clapper, so that the rebound force cooperates with the magnetic attraction of the permanent magnet to the solenoid to return the clapper to its rest position, substantially without bounce, thereby producing a highly damped clapper motion.

  • Patent number: 4566400
Abstract: An improved bell is disclosed which features a clapper continuously adjustable for hardness of strike. The clapper comprises a hard inner member and a resilient outer member. The periphery of the clapper is circular but the hard inner member is not circular about the same center as the periphery so that the amount of resilient material between the solid inner core member and the periphery varies circumferentially around the clapper. At the time of manufacture of the bell it is tested to locate the point on the bell body at which "wow and flutter" in the tone emitted by the bell is minimized. A single insulated pin serves to orient the handle of the bell, the bell body and the plane of swing of the clapper. The attachment of the handle, the bell body and the clapper is such as to minimize extraneous noise. An elastomer clapper shaft is employed, and its effective flexing length may be varied.
