  • Patent number: 6592931
Abstract: In a coating method, a precoating layer is applied to one surface of a web W laid between a plurality of web guide rollers GR while a leading end surface of an extrusion-type head portion EX is pressed against the one surface of the web. Accordingly, entrained air increasing as the transferring speed of the web becomes higher could be prevented from entering a coating point on a doctor edge surface near an outlet of a slot by the meniscus of coating liquid formed in a slight gap between the front edge surface of the extrusion-type head portion and the one surface of the web approaching there. As a result, the precoating layer having an excessive amount can be applied stably without turbulence at the coating point caused by the entrained air. Further, coating can be done stably in the rod portion by setting the thickness of the precoating layer for a final coating layer and a virtual coating layer.

  • Patent number: 6149726
Abstract: A device for doctoring and/or metering a liquid or viscous medium on a moving operating surface includes a doctoring assembly having a doctoring surface extending transversely across the entire operating surface and pressing thereagainst. A doctoring support beam movably supports the doctoring assembly in a direction transverse to the operating surface. A pressure unit produces a force which is exerted on the doctoring assembly in order to produce a contact pressure between the doctoring surface and the operating surface. Undesired temperature-based movements of the doctoring support beam relative to the operating surface can be compensated for by a compensation device located in the pressure flow path between the doctoring support beam and the doctoring assembly. This ensures that the contact pressure between the doctoring surface and the operating surface is substantially unaffected by such movements or deformations of the doctoring support beam.

Abstract: A porous product, typically a metal foam sheet, is produced as a tailored, engineered product. The porous product can have enhanced strength, as well as more desirable electrical and mechanical properties. The product which first exists typically as a flexible, generally polymeric foam sheet in strip form, which strip is produced in the longitudinal direction, is stretched in a direction other than its direction of production. The porous product can have pores which would be anisotropic in form in usual production, which are stretched to at least substantially isotropic form. The product can even be tailored to have pores which are anisotropic in the direction of the stretch. Thus, an engineered product can be produced which, for example, as an open-cell metal foam prepared from a polymeric foam can have conductivity, both thermal and electrical, as well as strength and ductility, tailored for greater uniformity and performance.

Abstract: The present invention is the formation of solid polymer layers under vacuum. More specifically, the present invention is the use of "standard" polymer layer-making equipment that is generally used in an atmospheric environment in a vacuum, and degassing the monomer material prior to injection into the vacuum. Additional layers of polymer or metal or oxide may be vacuum deposited onto solid polymer layers. Formation of polymer layers under a vacuum improves material and surface characteristics, and subsequent quality of bonding to additional layers. Further advantages include use of less to no photoinitiator for curing, faster curing, fewer impurities in the polymer electrolyte, as well as improvement in material properties including no trapped gas resulting in greater density, and reduced monomer wetting angle that facilitates spreading of the monomer and provides a smoother finished surface.

  • Patent number: 4949666
Abstract: In an apparatus for the coating of spacer frames for insulating glass, exhibiting corners bent in one piece, with adhesive and, respectively, sealing compound, the relative position between the connecting line of the orifices of the nozzles, on the one hand, and the axis, about which the turning device is pivotable, on the other hand, can be varied. This variability is achieved either by arranging the pivotal support of the turning device to be movable laterally and vertically (upwards and downwards) in the frame of the apparatus, or by disposing the component carrying the nozzles in the frame of the apparatus to be vertically movable (upwards and downwards) and the pivotal support of the turning device to be movable laterally. In this way, the objective is attained that the nozzles remain aligned, even during turning of the spacer frames, in opposition to the lateral faces of the spacer frames.

  • Patent number: 4871588
Abstract: A method of coating embossed panels having embossed panel portions which are offset in generally parallel planes. A liquid accent coating is applied to the panels as they are moved along a predetermined path. A roll is reverse rotated to wipe liquid coating from the high points of the embossed panel surfaces, creating a high level of contrast with the relief portions where a greater amount of coating remains. The rolls do not wipe the steps between panel portions so that the steps are more heavily coated, to create a dark shadow line. Doctor blades strip coating from the roll, except in those portions that do not contact the panel steps. Vacuum removes excess coating from the stepped areas of the panels and also from those portions of the rolls not contacted by the doctor blades. Apparatus for carrying out the method is also disclosed.
