  • Patent number: 4388891
Abstract: An apparatus for the application of a protective coating to the welded or soldered seam of can bodies. Two driven rolls arranged in tandem or series apply a protective coating, typically in the form of a lacquer, to the seam of the cans or can bodies. One of the rolls covers the actual seam and the other roll covers the region neighboring the seam. Both effective regions of the rolls overlap laterally of the seam at critical locations where the protective coating is to be applied to the seams of the can.

  • Patent number: 4365583
Abstract: A plating chamber holds a reducing or inert atmosphere heated to a temperature suited for plating or galvanizing. A pair of power-driven coating rolls are horizontally disposed in the plating chamber, one roll contacting the top surface of a metal strip to be plated and the other contacting the bottom surface. A molten coating metal is continuously supplied so as to form a uniform film of the metal on the peripheral surface of each coating roll. By means of deflector rolls horizontally disposed in the plating chamber, a metal strip heated to a temperature suited for plating continuously travels through the chamber. A surface of the strip becomes plated on contacting the peripheral surface of the coating roll on which the film of the molten coating metal has been formed. The coating rolls can be drawn away from the surface of the strip by shifting the deflector or coating rolls, so that plating can be applied to one, both or neither side of the strip as desired.

  • Patent number: 4335674
Abstract: An apparatus for applying hot melt glue to back surfaces of book blocks, wherein these back surfaces are distributed in fan-like fashion, by means of glueing rollers, two of which are consecutively arranged conically-shaped rollers which are adjustable in their angular setting, whereby the tearing out resistance of the sheet edges is increased. Each glueing roller is supported in an individual glue pan which may be separately pivoted and adjusted in its height. By adjusting of angular setting of the aforementioned two rollers the vertical position of each glue pan may be corrected. This will ensure a uniform and sufficiently large glue layer over the back surfaces of the blocks throughout the entire process of glueing.

  • Patent number: 4077355
Abstract: My invention relates to the method and apparatus for printing stripe patterns on the outside surface of cylindrical objects such as glass tumblers with their axes vertical during the printing operation, the stripes being printed substantially circularly about the axis of the cylinder as the center. The cylinder being striped is supported at a printing station for free rotation about its vertical axis. A stripe printing head provided with a stripe printing roller and an ink applicator drum, both rotating about substantially vertical axes, is moved to bring the printing roller in tangential printing contact with the tumbler surface. The printing head includes an enclosed ink (or pigment) supply well adjacent a segment of the perimeter of the applicator drum and means for maintaining the supply well full from a supply reservoir.

  • Patent number: 4066808
Abstract: Labeling apparatus wherein a rotor rotatable about a vertical axis is provided with peripherally spaced suction pads for taking labels presented thereto in vertical positions, moving them by adhesive-applying rolls for application of adhesive thereto and then pressing them into engagement with the side surfaces of containers supported in vertical positions. The adhesive-applying rolls are supported in substantially vertical positions in tangential relation to the rotor and there are adjustably mounted doctor rolls supported in tangential engagement with the adhesive rolls. The surfaces of the adhesive-applying and doctor rolls have mutually interengaged ribs and grooves and adhesive is supplied to the upper ends of the doctor rolls in free flowing streams so as to flow downwardly over the lateral surfaces of the rolls to their lower ends. A tray at the lower ends provides for collecting the adhesive and returning it to a reservoir for reuse.

  • Patent number: 4014287
Abstract: Bookbinding apparatus for applying glue to the backbone edge of collated book sheets conveyed through a gluing station comprises counter rotating applicator rolls for transporting glue from a rectangular glue pot to the backbone the rolls substantially completely spanning the parallel sidewalls of the glue pot so that glue can not flow between the ends of the rolls and the side walls. Doctor blades extend from the ends of the glue pot to respective rolls so as to confine the adhesive below the rolls. One of the doctor blades is linearly retractable from its roll to an extent limited by a linearly adjustable stop which meters a volume of glue carried to the book in direct linear relation to the adjustment of the doctor blade stop.
