  • Patent number: 6183558
Abstract: A method for forming a molecular film includes the steps of: coating a surface of a substrate having active hydrogen atoms on its surface with a coating solution containing a silane-based compound having at least one reactive group selected from the group consisting of a chloro group, an alkoxy group and an isocyanate group; and effecting an elimination reaction between the active hydrogen atoms on the surface of the substrate and reactive groups of the silane-based compound, thereby covalently bonding the silane-based compounds to the surface of the substrate. The substrate is supplied to a chamber in which an atmosphere is maintained at a low water vapor density. The surface of the substrate is coated with a coating solution containing the silane-based compound and a solvent by using a transfer element. A dehydrochlorination reaction is effected between the active hydrogen atoms and the chloro groups of the silane-based compounds.

  • Patent number: 6152068
Abstract: An apparatus is disclosed for fabricating a laminate product having a pair of sheet materials spaced by a plurality of flexible parallel vanes which are secured to the sheet material so that planar movement of the sheet materials in opposite directions cause the vanes to shift between open and closed positions. The vane material is formed from a web of material by dyeing the material, drying the dyed material, applying spaced longitudinally extending lines of adhesive on opposite faces of the material, and cutting the material into a plurality of side-by-side strips with each strip having a bead of adhesive on each face and along opposite side edges. The cut material with adhesive applied thereto is taken up on a transfer roll and moved to a vane/strip handling station where the strips of material are processed and delivered to a laminating station in parallel overlapping relationship with each other.

  • Patent number: 6110281
Abstract: A coating apparatus for controlling processing medium on and in non-woven rollers and on material adapted to pass through rollers is disclosed. The apparatus comprises a pair of non-woven rollers having generally parallel axes and having a porous, generally cylindrical outer surface. The rollers receive and absorb processing medium and have a portion of their adjacent outer surfaces through which material passes in pressure engagement whereby in the regions of the gaps where the rollers engage each other or the material passing therethrough, the processing medium will be of a generally uniform thickness. The rollers have gaps in regions along the edges of the material when the non-woven material passes therethrough. • Patent number: 6074480
Abstract: A method and apparatus is provided to enable the transfer coating of an elaborate and fine pattern of hot melt adhesive onto a workpiece, and to extend the service life of the first roll and the doctor blade. A predetermined pattern of hollows is provided on the surface of a first roll which is partially immersed and rotatably mounted in a tank of adhesive. A second roll which is in rotatable contact with the first roll, has a pattern of protrusions provided on its surface of the second roll that differs from that on the first roll. By this approach, the adhesive is transferred only to the protrusions of said second roll even if excess adhesive remains in the hollows of the first roll and even if some adhesive remains in areas other than the hollows. Accordingly, a necessary and sufficient amount of adhesive can be transferred onto the workpiece without the simultaneous transfer of any stains. In this way, an elaborate, fine, and clear pattern without any spreading and/or loss of shape can be obtained.

  • Patent number: 5922406
Abstract: A coating applicator is provided having a plate cylinder including a cylindrical body about which a coating plate is mounted in sleeve-like fashion. The plate is the type used in the flexographic printing industry, and is made of photosensitive, monomeric material. The longitudinal edges of the plate are mounted to the cylindrical body using a clamping mechanism which permits easy installation and removal. Even with relatively light pressure, the photopolymer plate releases a substantial portion of the coating material when the plate is applied to a workpiece. Consequently, the composition and secondary rollers may be spaced apart by a gap slightly smaller than the thickness of the workpiece. Because of this gap, coating material does not tend to be applied from the plate cylinder to the secondary roller, thus reducing the safety and environmental problems associated with cleaning the secondary roller.

Abstract: A pre-metering rod is located between a coating applicator and an air knife, and replaces the smoothing roll in some existing air knife applications. The pre-metering rod consists of a small diameter rod of about one and one-half inches in diameter that rotates at 10-500 rpm against the direction of the coating layer on the web. The web is wrapped around a portion of the circumference amounting to about twenty-five degrees of the rod's surface as it travels over the rod. The rod is supported in a rod holder supported on a support beam. Actuators move the support beam away from the web for threading and maintenance, and towards the web to engage the rod with the web. The combination of the rod diameter, the amount of wrap on the rod, and the speed of the rod rotation determine the amount of pre-metering of the coating, which determines the thickness of the coating layer on the web that is presented to the air knife section. As a result, the thickness of the coating layer can be decreased.

Abstract: The present invention is an improved device for delivering a release agent to fuser rollers employed in various printer devices, such as laser printers, fax machines, copier machines, etc. The release agent delivery device of the present invention comprises an elongated web of microporous membrane (e.g., expanded polytetrafluoroethylene) bonded to a substrate, filled with release agent, and mounted between two shafts. The web spans across the fuser roller so that the roller is simultaneously cleaned and oiled during normal operation. When the portion of the web in contact with the fuser roller becomes contaminated or expends its release agent supply, the web can be advanced to place a fresh surface in contact with the fuser roller.

Abstract: A liquid-dispenser and surface applicator for sheet stock or other such workpieces, including an applicator member which preferably comprises at least one generally hollow elongated roller which contacts advancing workpieces and applies liquid to surfaces thereof as they pass. A cyclically repeatable liquid-dispensing apparatus meters predetermined pulsed quantities of the liquid from a source and these are coupled to a dispensing tube disposed within and extending axially along the inside of the applicator roller. The elastic response of the support sleds may be varied to alter the natural resonant frequency of the coating system.
