Rotary Applicator Patents (Class 118/258)
  • Publication number: 20030161963
Abstract: A coating apparatus for applying a coating liquid to a printing substrate. The apparatus includes a rotatable first roll, and a rotatable second roll positioned adjacent to the first roll and defining with the first roll a first nip through which the printing substrate passes. The apparatus also has a metering device for applying a layer of coating liquid onto the second roll, which in turn transfers the coating liquid to the printing substrate. The apparatus further has a controller that communicates with at least the second roll, wherein the controller performs the steps of determining whether the idle time of the second roll is longer than a predetermined threshold, setting a pre-spin flag if the idle time of the second roll is longer than a predetermined threshold, and directing the second roll to perform a pre-spin upon the presence of the pre-spin flag.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for improving the corrosion resistance of chrome plated materials. After the materials to be chrome plated are mechanically abrasively polished, but before they are reverse etched, they are power washed with a high-pressure liquid. A sprayer with nozzles directed inwardly towards the materials directs water onto the material at pressures in the range of 1000 or 2500 to 3000 psi. After the materials are chrome plated, they are heated above the melting point of a buffing compound, and then the heated materials with the buffing compound applied are buffed. An induction heater is used, before or after the buffing compound is applied. • Patent number: 6074480
Abstract: A method and apparatus is provided to enable the transfer coating of an elaborate and fine pattern of hot melt adhesive onto a workpiece, and to extend the service life of the first roll and the doctor blade. A predetermined pattern of hollows is provided on the surface of a first roll which is partially immersed and rotatably mounted in a tank of adhesive. A second roll which is in rotatable contact with the first roll, has a pattern of protrusions provided on its surface of the second roll that differs from that on the first roll. By this approach, the adhesive is transferred only to the protrusions of said second roll even if excess adhesive remains in the hollows of the first roll and even if some adhesive remains in areas other than the hollows. Accordingly, a necessary and sufficient amount of adhesive can be transferred onto the workpiece without the simultaneous transfer of any stains. In this way, an elaborate, fine, and clear pattern without any spreading and/or loss of shape can be obtained.

  • Patent number: 6066208
Abstract: An apparatus for applying a coating liquid to a web moving continuously along a path has a main frame forming an open space and a main backing roller journaled on the main frame and around which the web passes. A second frame in the space is independent of the main frame and displaceable relative thereto from a position in the space juxtaposed with the backing roller. An applicator unit on the second frame applies an excess of the coating liquid to the web and a dosing unit downstream along the path from the applicator unit strips from the web excess coating liquid and leaves on the web a coating of the liquid of a predetermined thickness.

  • Patent number: 6063192
Abstract: A method and apparatus for coating a traveling layer of material, in particular paper and/or cardboard. An applicator implement applies a predetermined and proper amount of a liquid or pasty medium onto an outer surface of a first rotating applicator roller which in turn transfers the liquid or pasty medium onto a first side of the moving layer of material just as it is moving through a press nip. A second layer of coating medium is applied indirectly with a second applicator implement onto an outer surface of a second rotating applicator roller from where it is transferred onto the previously coated side of the moving material layer while the first coat of coating medium is still wet.

The housing has a supply port adapted to receive sizing composition from a sizing supply source, an exit slot and a passageway extending from the supply port to the exit slot. The passageway receives sizing composition from the supply port and delivers the sizing composition to the exit slot such that the sizing composition exits the housing and is received on an outer surface of the roll applicator. The roll applicator is spaced from the housing such that the housing does not substantially contact the sizing composition once it is received on the roll applicator.

  • Patent number: 5958135
Abstract: Sheets to be coated with water-based coating material, for example a primer and a low adhesion backsize, are supplied from a feeder (1), in end-to-end overlapping relationship, to a dual coater (3) in which the sheets are coated individually on both sides. A sheet inserter (2) is provided, upstream of the dual coater, to insert sheets from a second supply into the sheets from the feeder (1). The dual coated sheets are dried as individual sheets or as a pseudo-web of overlapped sheets. The sheets are then overlapped, unless previously overlapped, and the direction of overlap changed, if necessary, to provide the trailing edge of each sheet on top of the leading edge of each succeeding sheet. The overlapped sheets are conveyed through an adhesive transfer station (7) where stripes (236) of at least partially dried adhesive are coated onto the dual coated sheets from a transfer belt (71).

  • Patent number: 5885656
Abstract: The process and apparatus of the present invention teaches how to treat a well-integrated woven or non-woven web of hydrophobic fibers to make selective areas hydrophyllic. It also can be used to make a web of hydrophyllic fibers selectively hydrophobic. It uses a plurality of selectively adjustable covers on an applicator roll rotating in a bath of liquid to place the liquid material on selective areas of the moving web. In a preferred embodiment the web is non-woven and the fibers are hydrophobic in nature, e.g., dry-laid or melt-blown polypropylene or polyethylene fibers or spun-bonded hydrophobic filaments. A woven web made of cotton or other hydrophyllic fibers may also be used if the end result is to create partially hydrophobic areas on a hydrophyllic web. The areas of liquid are positioned on the web only where desired so as to eliminate the excessive cost of unwanted and unnecessary coating material. If the web is hydrophobic, the liquid makes that area hydrophyllic.
