Rotary Applicator Patents (Class 118/258)
  • Patent number: 5876530
Abstract: A glue application roll 1 rotating at a circumferential velocity v.sub.1 is moved to touch a downstream side corrugating roll (an upper corrugating roll) 9 rotating at a circumferential velocity v.sub.2 via a core paper 11 and, in response to variation in vibration, noise, drive torque or pressing reaction force of the glue application roll 1 caused thereby, a setting position of the glue application roll 1 to the downstream side corrugating roll 9 is adjusted, thus a gap between the glue application roll 1 and the downstream side corrugating roll 9 is maintained approximately at a thickness of the core paper 11.

Abstract: Sheets to be coated with water-based coating material, for example a primer and a low adhesion backsize, are supplied from a feeder (1), in end-to-end overlapping relationship, to a dual coater (3) in which the sheets are coated individually on both sides. A sheet inserter (2) is provided, upstream of the dual coater, to insert sheets from a second supply into the sheets from the feeder (1). The dual coated sheets are dried as individual sheets or as a pseudo-web of overlapped sheets. The sheets are then overlapped, unless previously overlapped, and the direction of overlap changed, if necessary, to provide the trailing edge of each sheet on top of the leading edge of each succeeding sheet. The overlapped sheets are conveyed through an adhesive transfer station (7) where stripes (236) of at least partially dried adhesive are coated onto the dual coated sheets from a transfer belt (71).

  • Patent number: 5843529
Abstract: A pre-metering rod is located between a coating applicator and an air knife, and replaces the smoothing roll in some existing air knife applications. The pre-metering rod consists of a small diameter rod of about one and one-half inches in diameter that rotates at 10-500 rpm against the direction of the coating layer on the web. The web is wrapped around a portion of the circumference amounting to about twenty-five degrees of the rod's surface as it travels over the rod. The rod is supported in a rod holder supported on a support beam. Actuators move the support beam away from the web for threading and maintenance, and towards the web to engage the rod with the web. The combination of the rod diameter, the amount of wrap on the rod, and the speed of the rod rotation determine the amount of pre-metering of the coating, which determines the thickness of the coating layer on the web that is presented to the air knife section. As a result, the thickness of the coating layer can be decreased.

Abstract: An apparatus for transferring and spreading a high-viscosity bonding agent to a thickness of about 10 .mu.m on a bonding-agent onto a member. The device includes a squeegee table on which a bonding agent is spread, and a film moving device for feeding a film made of elastic material from one end to the other end of the squeegee table at a predetermined speed and sticking the film onto the bonding agent. The film moving device then peels the film off the spreading side at a speed at which the upper half of the bonding agent layer is peeled off from the other end of the squeegee table, whereby the thickness of the bonding agent is reduced to half of that which has been spread on the squeegee table. The film moving device then feeds the film having the bonding agent onto a member and peels off the film from the member, thereby transferring a bonding agent having a thickness of about 1/4 of the thickness of the bonding agent spread on the spreading side, not greater than 10 .mu.m, for example, to the member.

  • Patent number: 5709747
Abstract: The process and apparatus of the present invention teaches how to treat a well-integrated woven or non-woven web of hydrophobic fibers to make selective areas hydrophyllic. It also can be used to make a web of hydrophyllic fibers selectively hydrophobic. It uses a plurality of selectively adjustable covers on an applicator roll rotating in a bath of liquid to place the liquid material on selective areas of the moving web. In a preferred embodiment the web is non-woven and the fibers are hydrophobic in nature, e.g., dry-laid or melt-blown polypropylene or polyethylene fibers or spun-bonded hydrophobic filaments. A woven web made of cotton or other hydrophyllic fibers may also be used if the end result is to create partially hydrophobic areas on a hydrophyllic web. The areas of liquid are positioned on the web only where desired so as to eliminate the excessive cost of unwanted and unnecessary coating material. If the web is hydrophobic, the liquid makes that area hydrophyllic.

  • Patent number: 5702524
Abstract: The present invention is an improved flywheel for damping vibrations in a coating roll. The improved flywheel has an inner plate and an outer plate and sandwiched between the two plates are alternating rings of a solid body material such as aluminum or steel and conventional vibration damping material. Typically, the flywheel is attached to the coating roll outside of the bearing mounting block. The flywheel is designed such that movement of the inner and outer plates relative to each other works to compress the damping material sandwiched between the two plates. The plates are fastened together so that torsional motion between the plates, alternating rings, and coating roll is prevented. This compression of the damping material results in the absorption and dissipation of vibrational energy of the radial bending of the coating roll.

  • Patent number: 5631048
Abstract: A method of forming a thin film on the surface of a substrate using a roll coater without forming a projection of the thin film near the rear edge of the substrate includes the steps of: loading a substrate on a stage, moving the stage in a predetermined direction up to a certain position where at least a portion of the surface of the substrate comes into contact with the applicator roll while controlling the operation of the roll coating apparatus so that the amount of coating fluid transferred per unit area from the applicator roll to the substrate surface is a predetermined value, and further moving the stage in the predetermined direction to cancel the contact between the surface of the substrate and the applicator roll while controlling the operation of the roll coating apparatus so that the amount of coating fluid transferred per unit area from the applicator roll to the substrate surface is relatively reduced.

  • Patent number: 5623740
Abstract: A paint roller edge guard apparatus facilitating the painting of a wall surface adjacent a non-painted surface from the application of paint to the non-painted surface from the roller sock. The apparatus comprises a handle and an edge guard having four edges and front and back faces. The edge guard is pivotally and rotatable supported on the handle. The roller is rotatably supported on the handle such that the roller may be rotated between a painting position, wherein the roller sock longitudinal axis is perpendicular to and adjacent the edge guard front face, and a filling position wherein the roller sock longitudinal axis is parallel to the edge guard front face. The roller sock may be placed in contact with the painted wall by application of pressure to the handle deflecting the edge guard rearward allowing the roller sock to contact the painted wall surface.

  • Patent number: 5620514
Abstract: A magnetizable layer can be applied to a flexible backing web by gravure coating at high speeds by independently driving the backing web at a speed that is substantially different from the surface speed of the gravure roll. Especially high coating speeds have been achieved when the gravure roll rotates oppositely to the direction in which the backing web is advancing. In one embodiment, a nip roll presses the backing web against the backup roll, there is a gap between the gravure roll and a backup roll, and an idler roll is positioned downstream of the gap to force the backing web into contact with the gravure roll over a short arc. When that backup roll has a hard surface such as metal, its surface can be machined with precision, and that precision can be maintained in spite of exposure to solvent vapors.

  • Patent number: 5620515
Abstract: A coating apparatus comprises a carrier movable in a to-and-aft direction, a swing frame having a portion pivotably supported by the carrier, three pairs of bearings mounted to the swing frame, and three rolls journaled by the three pair of bearings, respectively. A drive unit includes three variable speed motors which include respective output shafts connected to the corresponding rolls through offset shaft couplings. The three rolls have respective axes which are connected to form an imaginary triangle. That portion of the swing frame which is pivotably supported by the carrier is located outside of the imaginary triangle. The imaginary triangle is moved back and forth when the swing frame is swung back and forth. The carrier is reciprocated to accommodate the reciprocating movement of the imaginary triangle.
