  • Patent number: 10870927
Abstract: An electrospinning system for weaving nanofibers may include a digital array of addressable nozzles electrowetted with a liquid nanofiber source material. Each nozzle in the array may include an individually controllable actuator and electrode for modulating the flowrate and charge of the liquid nanofiber source material. Through selectively applying pressure and voltage to individual nozzles, the location of the nanofiber relative to the array may be controlled through digital signals alone, without having to physically move any component of the electrospinning system. By simultaneously controlling the path of multiple nanofibers within the array, new and complex weaving patterns for braids may be achieved with enhanced strength and other properties at a scale previously unattainable.

  • Patent number: 8985051
Abstract: A coating apparatus produces a spray of charged droplets and controls the spray angle of travel of the spray toward the object to be coated. Electrically charging droplets minimizes the amount of coating material required to uniformly coat a surface as compared to conventional web coating techniques such as blade coating. An inductive ring guides the spray charged droplets as they exit the nozzle of a spray device. The electrostatic repulsion between the charged droplets insures that a uniform coating of liquid formulation can be applied to a web surface.

Abstract: A manufacturing apparatus includes a chuck for contacting a peripheral portion of a workpiece. The apparatus includes a nozzle to eject a process fluid (liquid or gas) toward a first surface while the workpiece is in contact with the chuck. The apparatus also includes a plate having an opening configured such that a support fluid (liquid or gas) can be ejected toward a second surface of the workpiece while the workpiece is in contact with the chuck. In an example, the support fluid can be used to counteract a displacement of the interior portion in the direction perpendicular to the plane of the workpiece due to, for example, gravity and/or hydrostatic pressure of the process fluid.
