The preferred curing means is a gas flame.

    Abstract: A process for providing a substrate such as a polyethylene terephthalate container with a gas barrier coating of a copolymer of vinylidene chloride is disclosed. The process includes locating the container to be coated in close proximity to one or more airless spray nozzles and impacting the outside surface of the container with a stream of a stabilized aqueous polymer dispersion such as an aqueous polyvinylidene chloride dispersion. The impacting force of the stable polyvinylidene chloride dispersion on the surface of the container is sufficient to cause selective destabilization of the dispersion at the surface interface to form a gel layer containing the polymer in the continuous phase. This gel layer serves as an adhesive layer for an overlying layer of the aqueous polymer dispersion as a continuous uniform coating. The resulting wet coating does not sag or run off.

In an embodiment of the invention two more adjacent but axially separated rings of friction material are provided, the annular zone or zones between adjacent rings having much less or substantially no friction material. In another embodiment, the friction material is applied primarily to the non-load bearing side of the threads in the ring.

    Abstract: A method and apparatus are disclosed for applying a light coating of fluid to the outer surface of a circumferential strip of one end of a cylindrically shaped article. The article is stabilized against angular axial movement while being advanced and rotated, in a planar path, through a treating zone. An airborne mist containing fine particles of the fluid is produced. This mist is transported to the treating zone and directed to impinge upon said circumferential strip. The impinged fluid mist is then leveled to achieve a uniform coating.

The apparatus holds the tire in a horizontal position and first grasps the upper side wall of the tire and then pulls the tire downwardly to spread it apart so that the processing fluid can be sprayed over the entire internal surface including the beaded edge. The method includes clamping the green tire in a horizontal position by its upper bead, then grasping the lower bead and pulling the tire apart to its open position where its internal surface is fully exposed and rotating the tire as the internal surface is sprayed completely, including the beaded edges.

    Abstract: A coupling includes a pair of cup-shaped members with one mounted for sliding axial motion inside the other. The outside coupling acts as a support or base which is connected to a conveyor that moves the coupling between workpiece loading and unloading means. The inside member also carries detents which move radially in and out to grasp or release the workpiece in response to axial motion between the two cup-shaped members. When combined with a conveyor, appropriate cam and follower means are provided to cause the coupling to be operated for grasping and releasing the workpiece in a timed sequence and to move the coupling from a workpiece loading station to an unloading station. The coupling and conveyor are suited for use in handling soft or easily marked materials such as plastic, soft metals, and the like. A method for workpiece handling includes steps of rotating, advancing in stop-and-go fashion while continuously rotating, and unloading.
