  • Patent number: 7504605
Abstract: The heating apparatus of a surface-heating type, includes a rotary member, an opposing member that forms a nip with respect to the rotary member, and a heating member for heating a portion of a rotary member surface other than the nip, in which temperature used for heating the rotary member by the heating member is controlled, and a heating material inserted in the nip to be nipped and conveyed therein is heated using heat of the rotary member. Accordingly, after insertion of the heating material in the nip starts, control temperature of the heating member is increased before the rotary member rotates by one revolution, thereby preventing an uneven heating phenomenon of the heating material in the first revolution and the second revolution or later, and preventing uneven gloss due to the uneven heating phenomenon in the fixing apparatus.

  • Patent number: 7253378
Abstract: A base sheet is spanned over a lower roller, and an upper roller pulls a cover sheet along a path and presses it against the base sheet at the lower roller. A preheater housing along the path upstream of the rollers is formed with a chamber open toward the path. A radiant heater in the chamber is directed transversely at the path so as to heat the cover sheet passing along the path. A sensor along the path adjacent the chamber detects atmosphere around the chamber and generates an output when the detected atmosphere indicates an unsafe hot condition of the cover sheet. A shutter can shift between a retracted position offset from the chamber and an advanced position closing the chamber. A controller connected to the sensor shifts the shutter from the retracted position to the advanced position when the output is generated by the sensor.

  • Patent number: 7247344
Abstract: The present invention is directed to a method and an apparatus for applying a surface treatment composition to a photosensitive printing element during thermal processing. A photosensitive printing element is contacted with a web of absorbent material that is capable of absorbing material that is melted or softened from an imaged and exposed surface of a photosensitive printing element. The web of absorbent material is coated with a surface treatment composition to transfer the surface treatment composition from the web of absorbent material to the imaged and exposed surface of the photosensitive printing element. Applying the surface treatment composition during thermal processing provides for more complete and more uniform coverage of the surface treatment composition on the photosensitive printing element.

  • Patent number: 6730165
Abstract: A device for impregnating a paper web with a molten polymer to produce a paper with improved resistance to oil and grease are provided. The device includes, as part of an on-machine process, an ordinary paper web composed of cellulose or synthetic fibers, a polymer applicator, a hot reel, and a winding reel. The web, which is created through a series of processes located upstream of the subject invention, first encounters the polymer applicator, which deposits a quantity of molten polymer onto the surface of the web. The web is next transferred to a hot reel, which maintains the temperature of the molten polymer above its melting point and thereby facilitates wicking of the molten polymer into the web. After the web passes the hot reel, it is wound onto a winding reel, where additional wicking occurs until the molten polymer cools to a temperature below its melting point.
