Abstract: The invention is applicable to an internal combustion engine of the four-stroke cycle type equipped with a compression release engine retarder capable of producing one compression release event and one bleeder retarding event in each cylinder during every two revolutions of the engine crankshaft. This is accomplished by a novel articulated rocker arm assembly including a rocker member and a latch member in which the rocker member, engaged by the exhaust pushtube, is disengaged from the latch member, which acts against the crosshead, after a compression release event has occurred, but remains engaged if a compression release event does not occur. When the latch member is disengaged from the rocker member, the exhaust valves are held in a partially open position to produce a bleeder retarding event. A trigger valve acutated by the exhaust pushtube and rocker member vents the reatarder high pressure hydraulic system to initiate the bleeder retarding event.

  • Patent number: 4787044
Abstract: Engine speed is controlled during gear change by way of both fuel supply apparatus and exhaust brake so that engine speed is equal to the rotational speed of an input shaft of a transmission coupled via a clutch to the engine. When the engine speed is higher than the rotational speed of the transmission input shaft, exhaust braking is performed to quickly reduce the engine speed thereby establishing synchronization. Then the fuel supply apparatus is controlled to reduce the amount of fuel for maintaining the decreased engine speed. On the other hand, when the engine speed is lower than the rotational speed of said transmission input shaft, only the fuel supply apparatus is controlled to increase the fuel amount. Engine braking is performed only when the clutch is in disconnected state, and therefore, vehicle speed is not decelerated due to the engine braking.

The slave piston of the compression release brake is relocated so as to register with one of the two exhaust valves and the crosshead assembly is modified so that actuation of the exhaust valve rocker arms will open both exhaust valves in the normal manner during the fueling mode of engine operation while the slave piston of the compression release brake will open only one of the exhaust valves during the engine braking mode of engine operation.

  • Patent number: 4426986
Abstract: An apparatus is proposed for controlling the exhaust recirculation rate in an internal combustion engine, in particular an engine with auto-ignition, which includes preferably one mixture valve in the area of the discharge opening of the exhaust recirculation line and which is characterized in that the control is accomplished via the mixture valve position ahead of the inlet valves in accordance with the concentration of at least one component of the air-exhaust gas mixture and/or at least one component of the exhaust gas. Thus it is possible to operate the engine with a relatively emission-free exhaust. An exhaust gas reservoir is further provided, with which peaks in the exhaust gas concentration due to a dynamic driving mode can be intercepted. Finally, it is also proposed that the exhaust recirculation be realized solely via a pressure, which can be controlled in open-loop or closed-loop fashion, in the exhaust line by means of a valve.

Abstract: The invention provides an automatic exhaust brake valve unit having a hollow body with an exhaust gas passage extending therethrough and a valve closure member movable in the hollow body between a closed position in which it closes the passage, and an open position in which it leaves the passage clear, the hollow body having an open end face closed by a removable plate so that the valve closure member can be removed through that end face. Such a valve unit is usable to control exhaust gas flow in either direction through the exhaust gas passage when connected in an exhaust system of a motor vehicle.

  • Patent number: 4399788
Abstract: In a two-stroke cycle internal combustion engine, cylinder structure has an inside peripheral surface which defines a cylinder bore and is formed with an exhaust port, which has an axial extent along the axis of said cylinder bore and communicates with said exhaust system. A piston is axially reciprocable in said cylinder bore and adapted to open and close said port. A restricting member is mounted in said cylinder structure adjacent to said port and adjustable between a full-flow position, in which said restricting member exposes said exhaust port throughout its axial extent, and a restricting position, in which said restricting member restricts the axial extent of said exhaust port. A positioning drive is operatively connected to said restricting member and operable to adjust said restricting member between said full-flow and restricting positions. The positioning drive is adapted to be controlled in dependence on the exhaust gas pressure in said exhaust gas system.

  • Patent number: 4393831
Abstract: A control system for a mixture-compressing internal combustion engine with a throttle flap valve disposed in an intake manifold and an idle channel bypassing the throttle flap valve. An additional channel, terminating downstream of the idle channel in the intake manifold, with the additional channel merely forming an air channel. A valve is provided for controlling a communication between the additional channel and the intake manifold. The valve is connected with a diaphragm a back surface of which is adapted to be exposed to the intake manifold vacuum through a line connected to the intake manifold. A three/two-way on-off valve, influenced by a control device, is disposed in the line connected to the intake manifold. The on-off valve is adapted to vent the backside of the diaphragm when the intake manifold vacuum is above an idle value during a coasting of the engine so as to enable air to be introduced into the intake manifold through the additional channel.

  • Patent number: 4391234
Abstract: In an internal-combustion engine comprising at least one cylinder having a port and a piston which is reciprocable to open and close said port, the effective axial extent of said port is adapted to be reduced by a restricting member, which is movably mounted adjacent to a flow passage which adjoins said port. The restricting member has a restricting edge and is movable to a restricting position in which said restricting edge is substantially flush with the peripheral surface of the cylinder bore. The restricting member defines the exhaust passage on one side thereof adjacent to the exhaust port. In order to improve the cooling of the cylinder and the exhaust gas flow, the restricting member constitutes a hinged member, which is pivoted on an axis at that end which is opposite to the restricting edge.
