A spark jumps from the electrode to an interior surface of the structure and ignites the fuel inside the structure, causing a flame to propagate. The flame heats the catalytic structure to an activation temperature, after which the fuel is combusted flamelessly on the surface of the catalytic structure. The device includes a heating plate for heating the volatile substance and for receiving heat from the catalytic structure. A heat box substantially surrounds the catalytic structure and heating plate. The heat box has a window through which volatile substances released from the heating plate may escape.

The rotor is made to rotate at a speed proportional to the ground speed of the apparatus and such that a distal end of the rotor moves arcuately in very close proximity to the plastic film at the bottom of the arc. Gearing and rotor length are selected so that the arcuate speed of the distal end of the rotor during its rearward travel at the bottom portion of its swing is equal to the ground speed of the apparatus. Various means for heating one or more distal ends of the rotor for burning the planting holes through the plastic film while rotating in close proximity to the plastic film are provided.

In this manner, fuel gas is efficiently brought in contact with the surface of the catalyst layer and the temperature of the catalyst is prevented from fluctuating even though heating quantity in an exothermic section changes. Thus, catalytic combustion can be reliably accomplished in the compact combustion chamber.
