The side of the tamper includes a shoulder or projection that releasably interference couples with the tamper-engaging portion. In a first embodiment, the tamper-holding mechanism includes a tamper-engaging portion with a generally triangular-shaped body having a vertex that is urged against the side to releasably interference couple with the shoulder or projection on the side of the tamper. The non-smokability of the prefabricated product is preferably ensured by a perforation of the skein sheath. The various disclosed systems of the invention are characterized in that for completing the cigarette by the consumer, no axial ejection of the tobacco filling from the skein sheath is necessary.

These machines have two basic functions controlled by a single drive handle, the first controls compaction of tobacco, the second ejection of tobacco. The compaction function is improved by two alternative cam arrangements interacting with the compactor. In one embodiment, a stud moving in an internal cam raceway controls all cam motion, this greatly simplifies backward and forward motion of the compactor, preferably the stud is a roller stud. In the other embodiment, an internal cam cooperates with an internal cavity of the compactor. In both embodiments movement of the handle drive, first moves the compactor forward, then the compactor remains stationary, while further motion of the handle ejects the tobacco.

Abstract: A tobacco product for the personal preparation of a cigarette, in particular a filter cigarette, includes an inherently stale tobacco portion (10) corresponding to the tobacco filling of a finished cigarette. The surface of the tobacco portion is defined by a wrapping or sheath (13), which consists of completely smokeable material. The sheath is permeable to air and the tobacco portion can only be smoked after tight wrapping of the sheath 13 with cigarette paper. The diameter of the tobacco portion (10) is smaller--preferably only slightly--than the inner diameter of the wrapping of cigarette paper or the like such as a preformed cigarette paper sleeve (11) for easy insertion of the tobacco portion (10) into the sleeve. In order to ensure that the tobacco portion (10) bears tightly within the cigarette paper, the tobacco portion (10) is responsive to heating to expand and tightly engages the cigarette paper and at least in the region of the glowing area (17).

Abstract: A compact cigarette making machine is disclosed. The machine consists of a hollow channel-shaped base carrying a tobacco receiving member which is longitudinally slideable within the base. A cover is pivotally secured to the tobacco receiving member and is slidable therewith with respect to the base. An elongate tobacco injection spoon is removably carried by the base and is stationary therewith, as a hollow circular nipple for reception of a preformed cigarette tube is provided at the forward end of the tobacco receiving member. A tobacco receiving slot is provided in the tobacco receiving member and the cover is provided with a projection for compacting tobacco positioned in the slot. With the cover closed and tobacco positioned in the slot and a cigarette tube positioned on the nipple, rearward movement of the cover and tobacco receiving member with respect to the base results in the injection of a compacted wad of tobacco into the cigarette tube.

Abstract: There is disclosed improvements in cigarette making machines for filling preformed paper cigarette tubes with tobacco wherein the machine has improved means for shearing any loose tobacco placed in the cavity wherein it is compacted, the improved shearing resulting from pressure maintained on the cutting edges.

Abstract: In a manual apparatus for tamping cigarette tubes with tobacco, comprising a casing having a tobacco compressing chamber disposed in the longitudinal direction thereof, a cover-type press bar associated with this tobacco compressing chamber and located in a cover that covers the casing and being swingable about an axis, as well as an ejector slide, which is connected with a spoon 25 that carries a plug of tobacco, for introducing the pressed tobacco plug into a cigarette tube intermittently clampingly held against a short socket, a clamping element embodied such as to separate the clamping operation from the filling operation is provided. The clamping element (14) for a cigarette tube (4) mounted on the short socket (3) is independent of the cover (6) and is controlled by the ejector slide (7). It is spring loaded and disposed laterally beside the short socket (3).

Abstract: Inside a casing comprised of a base plate and two side walls and a cover are mounted a plurality of rollers. The one roller is so supported in slots of the side walls as to be slidable crosswise to the lengthwise axis thereof. The rollers are enclosed by a flexible hose which forms a trough which can receive that tobacco to be converted into a cigatette. A tube-like part on the one side wall can receive a cigarette paper tube inside which the tobacco roll which has been formed between the rollers can be fed by means of the push-rod.

Abstract: The machine which is of lightweight, compact and economical construction has an elongate base having formed on its upper surface at one end a tobacco receiving and compacting chamber and a cover having a tobacco compactor mounted on its lower surface pivotally mounted on the base and movable from open tobacco insertion position to closed tobacco compacting position where the tobacco compactor forms a cylindrical chamber in the recess. One end of the recess is closed by a removable plate carrying an injection nipple and tobacco formed in the cylindrical chamber is transferred by a reciprocally movable injection spoon through the nipple and into a preformed cigarette tube positioned on the nipple. The nipple and injection spoon are easily removable from the machine for cleaning or replacement.

Abstract: In an apparatus for filling cigarette tubes in particular filter cigarette tubes, comprising a casing having a tobacco compressing chamber disposed in the longitudinal direction thereof, a coverlike press bar associated with this tobacco compressing chamber and located in a cover, that covers the casing housing and hinged on a shaft, as well as an ejector pusher for introducing a pressed plug of cut tobacco into a cigarette tube, that is intermittently retained by clamping on a short socket, the clamping device is intended to be embodied such that the clamping operation is completely divided from the filling operation, wherein the functional reliability of the individual elements of the filling apparatus is increased without making the apparatus less convenient to use.
