  • Patent number: 4411278
Abstract: Cigarette making machine and method of manufacture. The machine is of the type where a supply of tobacco for a single cigarette is compacted within a chamber and is then injected into a preformed paper cigarette tube by means of a spoon. In the invention, movable component parts are carried by an assembly plate formed from a single blank of sheet metal, the chamber and means to guide the spoon are provided by bending portions of the blank. The assembly plate is secured to a plastic outer housing by deforming heated plastic locator projections provided within the housing into contact with the plate.

  • Patent number: 4303082
Abstract: A manually operated machine is provided for compressing a charge of tobacco into a cylindrical shape and inserting the compressed charge into a preformed cigarette tube. It comprises a body having a nozzle for supporting the cigarette tube, a sliding compression member directly connected to an operating handle, and an ejector such as a tobacco spoon and ejection plug for injecting the cylindrical charge of tobacco through the nozzle into the cigarette tube. The ejector cooperates with a back edge of a tobacco insertion slot, which is directed at a small acute angle thereto, to exert a scissors-like cutting action on protruding strands of tobacco whereby there is produced a clean separation of the charge of tobacco to be compressed.

  • Patent number: 4249546
Abstract: An apparatus for filling empty cigarette blanks in which tobacco is placed in a tobacco magazine. When an operating lever is actuated, a pressure plate compresses the tobacco into a column. Upon further actuation of the lever, an elastic rack expels these columns so formed through a boss on which the cigarette blank is held by pincers. In order to adapt the apparatus to cigarette blanks of various lengths, in particular to cigarette blanks having single or dual filters, there is provided a movable slide which limits the amount of tobacco placed in the tobacco magazine to correspond to the amount required by a particular cigarette blank.

  • Patent number: 4230132
Abstract: The invention relates to a cigarette making machine of the kind having a fixed member and a movable packing block together defining a cylindrical cavity for compressed tobacco, a nozzle communicating with the end of the cavity for supporting a preformed paper tube and an ejector for ejecting the charge of compressed tobacco through the nozzle into the paper tube. A new operating mechanism for such a machine comprises a sliding member including a rack and a pivoted lever secured to the compression member having gear teeth in meshing engagement with the rack and operatively connected to the ejector. Restraining means restrains rotation of the lever during a first portion of the travel of the sliding member during which the tobacco is being compressed, after which said means disengages from the lever to permit rotation thereof in a second portion of the travel of the sliding member in which said ejector forces the charge of compressed tobacco through the nozzle into the paper tube.

  • Patent number: 4215705
Abstract: A cigarette making machine is disclosed. The machine comprises a housing, a tobacco chamber located in the housing, an opening in the housing for introducing a batch of tobacco in such chamber, a press plate movable in the chamber for compressing the batch of tobacco into a substantially cylindrical body, a cam plate pivotally mounted on the housing and engaging the press plate, an actuating member connected to such cam plate for operating the cam plate, a tube supporting means aligned and communicating with the chamber, a plunger slidably mounted in the housing and extending through the chamber, and link means interconnecting the plunger to the actuating member and operated by the cam plate. Rotation of the actuating member first causes the press plate to compress the batch of tobacco and then advances the plunger through the chamber to expel the tobacco body into a cigarette tube mounted on the tube supporting means.

  • Patent number: 4005716
Abstract: A device for manually forming a plug of tobacco and ejecting the plug into a cigarette tube includes a housing defining a chamber for receiving loose tobacco and a press bar for compressing the tobacco into a cylindrical plug. The press bar is slid horizontally in the chamber by means of a toggle lever system including a handle pivotally mounted at one end in the housing, and pivotally connected to the end of the press bar remote from the tobacco by a lever, which is pivotally connected to the handle and press bar. After forming the plug, the latter is ejected by means of a slide including a lug extending into the chamber at one end through a slot. A spoon on the inner end of the lug engages one end of the plug and, by moving the lug along the slot, the plug is forced into a cigarette tube mounted on a tube on one side of the housing.
