  • Patent number: 5176754
Abstract: A hand held coating apparatus is comprised of first and second applicators in one apparatus. The handle is located in between the first and second applicators. The first applicator head, located on one end of the handle, is rotatable and the second applicator head, located on the opposite end of the handle, is non-rotatable, which is stationary head. Rotatable applicator is comprised of a sleeve and a sponge cover, which are secured on a rod end. The rotatable applicator is for rapid and evenly spreading coating material. Non-rotatable applicator is for mixing, dabbing, and applying coating material in hard to reach areas. The apparatus is small enough to be flipped over with a single hand motion, which allows the user to implement each applicator individually. The apparatus can be used for coating, such as paint, art work, make-up applications, body massasge or cooking practices.

  • Patent number: 5163581
Abstract: A dispenser cartridge loaded with identical mini-compacts containing a test sample of a particular cosmetic such as lip gloss or eye shadow, thereby making it possible for consumers, before purchasing this cosmetic, to try out the sample. The cartridge, which is vertically mounted, includes a gravity-feed channel accommodating a stack of mini-compacts, the lowermost of which rests on a ledge in alignment with an exit slot. Below the slot is a slidable ejector which when pulled out acts to withdraw the lowermost mini-compact through the slot. And when the ejector, after the withdrawn mini-compact is removed therefrom, is pushed back, then the mini-compact, which is now lowermost, falls on the ledge in readiness for the next ejector action. The cartridge, when exhausted, is refillable through a channel inlet at the upper end of the cartridge.

  • Patent number: 5161688
Abstract: A sample of a cosmetic, such as a color, or a fragrance, is enclosed in a retaining cavity contained in a sampler. The sampler includes a base ply with a closure ply affixed to one side to cover a hole punched through the base ply to define the retaining cavity. A film ply is adhesively affixed to the other side of the base ply, also covering the punched hole, to thereby enclose the cosmetic in the retaining cavity. To use the sampler, the film ply is removed exposing the cosmetic. In a preferred embodiment, the sampler is made by punching a hole through a laminate formed of a base ply lying between a base ply adhesive and backing ply on one side and a liner adhesive and a liner ply on the other. The liner ply is removed and a closure ply affixed to the liner ply adhesive to form a retaining cavity. A cosmetic is then placed in the cavity. The backing ply is then removed, along with any residual cosmetic, and replaced by affixing a film ply to the base ply adhesive.

  • Patent number: 5161555
Abstract: An improved mascara brush is formed according to the standard twisted wire method, but utilizing heavily waved bristles instead of straight bristles. During the brush forming operation, the bristles orient so that the ends of the bristles are generally evenly distributed along the cylinder outline of the brush, i.e. the usual spiral groove is eliminated. The improved mascara brush has improved properties in that it picks up more mascara and more evenly distributes the mascara on the eyelash.

  • Patent number: 5107870
Abstract: The invention provides a novel method for evenly applying cosmetics, especially mascara, to an applicator brush and to the eyelashes. A cosmetic applicator formed with an applicator brush is removed from a container holding the cosmetic in a manner such that the applicator brush rubs against an applicator brush belonging to another applicator, thereby cleaning the brush to remove loose particles of the cosmetic and also causing cosmetic in the vicinity of the rubbing brushes to mix. This mixing action tends to thin ends of the cylindrical container and wherein the eyelash brushes of each of the cosmetic applicators are positioned along substantially the same longitudinal axis when the cap means of both cosmetic applicators are capped onto the container.

Abstract: A cosmetic applicator embodies two cosmetic applicator elements in a single barrel housing. One applicator element is slidably extendable from retracted position in the housing to extended use position wherein it is extended axially a distance from an opening at one end of the housing. The other applicator element rotatably is axially extended from retracted position in the housing to use position. The operating means by which each element is extended are located in the housing in such manner that the operating means associated with the said other element lies nested in the operating means associated with the first applicator element when that element is retracted. Thus, the length of the housing can be shortened and still accommodate both operating means since they occupy a common length extend in the housing. • Patent number: 4898193
Abstract: This brush, in particular for the application of mascara to the eyelashes, is constituted by a central elongate core which is surrounded at least partly by bristles radially implanted along longitudinal rows, one row of longer bristles whose ends constitute a ridge alternating with one row of shorter bristles. According to the invention, the ends of the bristles situated between two adjacent ridges are contained in a surface-envelope with a non-convex profile (flat or with a concave profile). During making up, the lashes are separated by the bristles of each ridge and they are charged with the make-up product coming from the regions situated between the ridges which can constitute, by an appropriate choice of the number of ridges (four in particular), a large application surface. The manufacture of such a brush is extremely simple since it suffices to effect a peripheral milling of a brush of the conventional type.

Abstract: A brush, allowing a rapid and even application of mascara, as well as a proper separation of the lashes, comprises a central core 202 formed from a metallic twisted wire holding a helical array of radial bristles 203 disposed in a regular manner. The bristles 203 have a diameter of from 0.10 to 0.25 mm and the number of bristles 203, per turn is from approximately 10 to 40. The bristles, 203a of the free end of the brush 201 can be more densely arranged for making-up the lashes of the lower eyelid.

  • Patent number: 4886080
Abstract: A cosmetics package according to the invention includes a container for a liquid, semi-liquid, paste-like or viscous cosmetics material, e.g. mascara, and a plurality of material applicators detachably secured to the container and having elongate portions projecting into the container. There is a plurality of openings into the container, each opening being defined by a projecting neck onto which a closure cap portion of a respective applicator can be detachably secured, e.g. by screw-fitting. The elongate portion of each applicator comprises a shaft attached at one end to the closure cap and having at its other end a material-retaining/applicating portion. The interior of the container may be sub-divided into mutually separate spaces for containing different cosmetics material, each opening providing access into a respective one of said spaces.

  • Patent number: 4886387
Abstract: Disclosed is an improved cosmetic container and applicator comprising: (a) a container having an open and a closed end; (b) an applicator including a cap, an elongated rod, and a brush; (c) an upper wiper element located at or near the open end of the container; and (d) a lower wiper element located further from the open end of the container than the first wiper element, the lower wiper serving to divide the container into two chambers. The upper wiper removes excess makeup from the brush when it is removed from the container and, preferably, also wipes the surface of the rod clean when the rod is removed from the container. The lower wiper cleans the brush after every use, thereby virtually eliminating the building up and drying of makeup that would otherwise occur on the brush.

The inner surface of the cap is coupled to a shaft having a plurality of applicator pads coupled to its end. The applicator pads are preferrably are made of a synthetic or artificial skin material which are resiliently urged away from the shaft. There is an actuator sleeve surrounding a portion of the shaft and coupled to the applicator pads which resiliently urge the sleeve toward the cap. The end of the sleeve closest to the cap includes a cam which operates in cooperation with a mating surface on the inner side of the cap to allow the actuator sleeve to be locked into a position which urges the applicator pads away from the shaft. The outer side of the cap is preferrably shaped to form a comfortable handle and includes a storage compartment for storage of keys, money and the like at the beach.
