  • Patent number: 6745791
Abstract: Pipeline stopping tools for use in temporarily stopping flow in a pipeline have features for centering a conduit or cable within the pipeline. The conduit or cable is guided into a recess, to avoid damage as the pipeline is squeezed closed. Alternative pipeline stopping stools have features for sealing against both the inside walls of the pipeline and against the cable. In a first tool, a linkage on a handle drives seal lips on a seal ring to engage around and seal against the cable in the pipeline, while the outer edges of the seal ring seal against the inside walls of the pipeline. The linkage includes jaws which force the seal lips against the cable. In a second tool, a resilient seal is attached over a center plate and side plates pivotably attached to the center plate. A linkage drives the center plates from an open to a closed position. A cable recess in the seal ring seals against the cable while the outside edges of the seal ring seal against the pipeline.

  • Patent number: 6745795
Abstract: A method of sealing a pipe and a device for sealing the pipe which prevents gas leakage out of a pipe stub plugged by a stopper disposed in a tee fitting, to allow a permanent cap to be welded onto the pipe. The device comprises an expandable plug comprising a pair of plates with a sealing member disposed between the plates. The plates can be squeezed together, for example by tightening nuts onto bolts extending through the plates to compress the sealing member and cause the periphery of the sealing member to expand against the inner wall of the pipe. Stabilizing means, for example a nut having a reverse thread and a complimentary tool, is provided for stabilizing the expandable plug radially within the pipe as the plates are squeezed together. The expandable plug is inserted into the pipe stub after the bypassed section of pipe has been removed, and lodged in the pipe by squeezing the plates together to expand the sealing member against the inner wall of the pipe stub.

  • Patent number: 6691727
Abstract: A system and method is claimed for protecting sections of a buried utility pipe that will eventually be excavated and exposed for tapping purposes. The system includes a protective collar that is applied to the utility pipe before the utility pipe is buried. When the utility pipe is to be tapped, the utility pipe is excavated directly above the protective collar. The presence of the protective collar provides a physical barrier that prevents the utility pipe from being damaged from the excavating equipment. When the protective collar is removed, a clean, unobstructed area of utility pipe is exposed on which a tapping procedure can be performed.

  • Publication number: 20040011397
Abstract: An in-line water shut-off valve is provided including a tailpipe which is attached to a main water line in order to form a “T” or 90° “L” which protrudes from the wall of the building and upon which is attached a cap which is threadably and rotatably attached and includes a plug therein so that upon rotation into a closed position, the plug will block the through flow bore of the tailpipe. After the installation of fixtures, the water supply line of the fixture may be threadingly attached to an outlet of the cap and the cap rotated 180 degrees to open the valve in order to allow for the flow of water; without the need of cutting off and replacing caps, soldering additional caps or valves or turning off the main water supply.

  • Publication number: 20030010953
Abstract: A gate valve for controlling fluid flow through a housing is disclosed. The gate valve includes a frusto-conical shaped internal cavity having a fluid inlet and a fluid outlet formed in the wall thereof. Fluid flow through the cavity (from inlet to outlet) is transverse to the direction of the taper of the frusto-conical cavity. A gate including a frusto-conical portion is disposed within the housing. The frusto-conical portion of the gate may be moved transversely through the fluid flow passing from the internal cavity inlet to the outlet. The frusto-conical portion of the gate is adapted to seat against the frusto-conical shaped internal cavity to block fluid flow there through. The gate does not contact the seat until the point at which all fluid flow is shut off. This reduces wear on the gate and the seat and promotes laminar flow through the valve during the process of closing the valve.

  • Patent number: 6257266
Abstract: A method and apparatus for the in situ repair or replacement of a pipeline, such as, a natural gas pipeline is made up of a transition fitting having a tubular section with means for temporarily sealing off that section, an expansion tool having an elongated handle control and an expandable portion insertable through the transition fitting and into an upstream pipeline to form a seal which prevents the escape of gas from the pipeline while one end of the transition fitting is being joined to the upstream pipeline. After the expandable portion is removed from the pipeline and the transition fitting, the tubular section of the transition fitting is sealed to prevent the escape of gas into the atmosphere as the fitting is being joined with the downstream or replacement pipeline. Once joined, the seal on the transition fitting is removed and the gas in the pipeline is free to flow through the pipeline.

  • Patent number: 6227455
Abstract: A pop-up sprinkler has a diaphragm-type valve in the lower end thereof which is actuated by a remote pilot valve. The pilot valve may be either solenoid actuated, or hydraulically actuated by a suitable valve actuator component. In a first embodiment an upwardly opening valve actuator component assembly housing communicates with a hollow wire and hose housing. The wire and hose housing connects to the side of the cylindrical outer body of the sprinkler to position a lid of the valve actuator component assembly housing at surface level, but outside a circular ground support flange connected to the sprinkler body. In a second embodiment, the housing is situated so that the lid effectively forms part of the circular ground support flange. The valve actuator component assembly housing may contain, for example, a pilot valve coupled to a solenoid, and a regulator. The pilot valve and regulator are connected through hoses to the sprinkler body.
