  • Patent number: 5839414
Abstract: A fuel injection system for internal combustion engines, having a high-pressure pump, whose pump work chamber can be made to communicate on the intake side with a fuel tank via a supply line and on the compression side with a common rail via a high-pressure line, from which common rail a plurality of injection lines lead away to the individual injection valves, and having one pressure valve each in the supply line and the high-pressure line, by way of which a return flow of fuel out of the pump work chamber into the supply line and out of the high-pressure line into the pump work chamber is prevented. The pressure valve of the supply line and the pressure valve of the high-pressure line are disposed in a common valve combination.

  • Patent number: 5814099
Abstract: A bileaflet prosthetic valve has leaflet pivots symmetrically or centrically located, thereby providing a central opening about twice the size of the two lateral openings. The valve opens from the center outward to provide nonturbulent central flow. The laminar leaflets are curved in cross-section so that the downstream edges of the leaflets are closer to the centerline of the cylindrical support ring when the leaflets are in an opened configuration. This position disposes the leaflets to favor valve closure when reverse flow of blood occurs. As the leaflets move toward a closed position, upstream edges of the leaflets begin to close the lateral openings, but this movement is opposed by blood flowing through these openings thereby providing a force to decelerate the leaflets and cushion their final closing.

  • Patent number: 5743872
Abstract: A limited backflow reflux valve for connection between a syringe, catheter, and bulk container of injection fluid. The reflux valve permits injection of fluid from the syringe through the catheter into the patient, and also permits refilling of the syringe from the bulk container, without disconnection of any tubing. The reflux valve also permits a limited volume of fluid to backflow from the catheter into the syringe, so that the catheter may be checked for patency, but prevents any further backflow along this path after this limited volume. Therefore, the limited backflow reflux valve not only permits injection through the catheter, but also permits both withdrawal of blood from the patient and refilling of the syringe from the bulk contrast media container, without requiring disconnection of the catheter or other tubing and without risk of contamination of the syringe or introduction of air, increasing the efficiency of the injection process, enhancing safety, and reducing waste of injection fluid.

  • Patent number: 5688473
Abstract: An apparatus for replacing particles in a process that transfers particles is disclosed. The apparatus employs a seal zone which is in communication with two zones of the process and in which particles that are being added to the process are purged. • Patent number: 5664938
Abstract: An improved mixing unit and check valve for a fluid pumping system wherein gradient proportioning is performed at high pressure are described. The mixing unit has lining means disposed on the inner surface of the chamber for preventing frictional contact between the steel of the chamber and the surface of the rotor. • Patent number: 5584315
Abstract: A check valve assembly, including a check valve and an associated check valve mounting flange. Additionally, a backflow preventer is shown, which uses a pair of check valve assemblies transversely positioned within a tubular housing. Also disclosed is a method for installing a downstream check valve to a mounting flange, located within a remote, outlet chamber of the backflow preventer housing. The check valve has an elongated base plate, generally elongated in shape. The mounting flange is provided with an elongated hole, sized and configured to pass a properly oriented downstream check valve during installation and removal procedures. Abstract: A backflow preventor which permits adjustment of the outflow direction is provided. A conduit provides fluid communication between the two valves of the backflow preventor. The conduit can be separated, e.g., by cutting along a groove, leaving annular flat regions. The annular flats are configured to engage with a coupler to provide leak-free connection between the separated portions of the conduit. The separated portions of the conduit can be rotated to adjust the outflow direction. Preferably, an infinite number of outflow directions are possible, all of which lie in a plane parallel to the inflow direction.

  • Patent number: 5207242
Abstract: An angled check valve has a valve housing with an inlet for admitting fluid flow into the housing in a first direction and an outlet for discharging fluid flow from the housing in a second direction. The first direction and the second direction are generally perpendicular. An inlet check assembly in the housing has a valve member movable in the first direction for preventing fluid flow from exiting the housing through the inlet. An outlet check assembly in the housing has a valve member movable in the second direction for preventing fluid flow from entering the housing through the outlet. In order to facilitate assembly and service of the check valve, the housing has an opening extending in the second direction through which the inlet check assembly and the outlet check assembly can be assembled into and removed from the housing.

  • Patent number: 5148828
Abstract: An angled check valve assembly having a housing with inlet and outlet passageways angled with respect to each other, and a spider spacer cage at a location which allows flow through the inlet passageway into the spider spacer cage where the flow is then angled and directed through the outlet passageway. One of the passageways has one-way check valve(s) therein to insure one-way flow from the inlet through the outlet passage. An installation entry is provided in the housing for insertion of the check valve(s). The installation entry is sealingly closed by a threaded closure member. The spider spacer cage is rotatable relative to the threaded closure so that, as the closure member is moved inwardly, at least one opening (in the side of spider spacer cage) can be kept in registry with one of the passageways. The spider spacer cage also forces the one-way valve(s) toward an abutment in the housing.

  • Patent number: 5135538
Abstract: A unidirectional flow heart valve includes a passageway having an inlet side and an outlet side. A disk occluder is disposed within the passageway. The disk occluder has a closed position wherein the disk occluder occludes fluid flow through the passageway and an open position wherein the disk occluder permits fluid flow through the passageway. A fulcrum causes the disk occluder to pivot off center between the open and closed positions. An electromagnetic control mechanism forces the disk occluder to remain closed when energized until a predetermined net pressure is reached against the disk occluder. When the electromagnetic control mechanism is either selectively deenergized or the force on the occluder disk is greater than the holding force of the electromagnetic control mechanism, the disk occluder is released from the closed position to pivot on the fulcrum in response to fluid pressure.

Abstract: A backflow preventor with increased performance, and increased ease of installation is provided. The check valves are configured to assist in redirecting flow along the desired pathway, when they are in the open position. The pathway is designed so that the number of changes of flow direction of the average streamline flow is reduced, preferably being about 180.degree.. The check valves are configured to reduce or eliminate divergent flow around the edges of the valve disks. A check valve with a reduced hold-open pressure includes a biasing device, such as a spring, directly connected to a pivoting clapper at one end and to the valve body at the other end. No intervening pivoting links are used between the spring and the clapper. Preferably, the clapper is connected only by being pivoted to the valve body and by the spring connecting it to the valve body.

Abstract: An improved heart valve prosthesis (20) suited for replacement of any of the four valves in the heart. The invention includes a generally annular orifice ring (22) having a fluid flow bore with a smooth inner wall (26) through which blood flows, controlled by two pivoted leaflet occluders (40), supported at the downstream edge of the orifice ring. The occluders are supported at the outboard edges of the orifice ring, overlapping the fluid flow bore and generally about each other to seal backflow and regulate flow in one direction only. Occluder travel is limited by bending moment resistance of the occluder hinge and lateral blood flow. Occluder hinges are unloaded at a point between fully opened and fully closed. The bearing surfaces between the occluder means and the annular orifice are wide enough to allow the valve to be constructed from materials of different hardnesses.
