Abstract: Fire hydrants which feature additional structure for reducing the potential that those with ill intent can foul municipal water supplies by introducing toxins or other materials into fire hydrants. Various embodiments include valves which close off portions of the hydrant otherwise available for receipt of toxic or other materials when the fire hydrant nozzle cap is unscrewed and open. Such valves preferably open, manually or automatically, when water is flowing from the water supply through the nozzle, a condition which renders it difficult at best to introduce toxins through the hydrant into a water supply, but close off portions of the barrel when the nozzle is open and water is not flowing through the nozzle.

A hollow valve fitting is rigidly secured to the interior end of the inlet tube for a connection to a source of pressurized fluid. A movable ball is located with a fluid conduit that extends from the interior of the inlet tube to the location of the potable water source. When the water pressure inside the inlet tube increases because of the presence of ice, the high pressure of such water moves the ball to open fluid flow of the high pressure fluid to the source of potable water which will be at a lower pressure, thus reducing the fluid pressure within the inlet tube and saving it from rupture.

  • Patent number: 6712088
Abstract: A counter-flow prevention valve is disposed within a body of a pilot-type channel valve. While electrical power is applied to a solenoid coil and the pilot-type channel valve is opened, i.e., while a gas is flowing through the counter-flow prevention valve and the gas is expanding, heat generated by the application of electrical power to the solenoid coil is conducted via the body and is effectively transferred to the counter-flow prevention valve. Therefore, even if the gas contains water vapor and even if this gas is cooled due to significant expansion, the water vapor can be prevented from freezing within the counter-flow prevention valve. Moreover, the volume of the pipe between the pilot-type channel valve and the counter-flow prevention valve is small, thereby resulting in a fast rise in pressure within the pipe and a quick opening of the counter-flow prevention valve, which provides an excellent valve-opening response.

Abstract: The invention is a device and method in a high-pressure chromatography system, such as a supercritical fluid chromatography (SFC) system, that uses a pump as a pressure source for precision pumping of a compressible fluid. The preferred exemplary embodiment comprises a pressure regulation assembly installed downstream from a compressible fluid pump but prior to combining the compressible flow with a relatively incompressible modifier flow stream. The present invention allows the replacement of an high-grade SFC pump in the compressible fluid flow stream with an inexpensive and imprecise pump. The imprecise pump becomes capable of moving the compressible fluid flow stream in a precise flow rate and pattern. The assembly dampens the damaging effects of an imprecise pump, such as large pressure oscillations caused by flow ripples and noisy pressure signals that do not meet precise SFC pumping requirements.

  • Patent number: 6450199
Abstract: A service coupling is provided that includes a body portion and an axially moveable valve housing disposed in a central passageway of the body portion. The valve housing includes at least one pressure balancing passage extending therethrough and a service valve sealingly engaged within an inner cavity of the valve housing. An actuator moves the valve housing to a forward position that causes the service valve to abut a port valve of a refrigerant system inlet port and disengage the service valve from sealing engagement within the cavity to open a flow path. The axial movement of the valve housing to the forward position also creates a void between the valve housing and the body portion. The void is provided in communication with the flow path by the at least one pressure balancing passage, such that the refrigerant pressure is substantially balanced on either end of the valve housing.

Abstract: A flush mounted valve assembly for releasably coupling a tubular member to the valve assembly by simple, one-handed operation. The tubular member, one end of which may be connected to a hose, is inserted into the coupler to open the valve. Helical grooves with a detent section on the tubular member engage matching nibs on the coupler, allowing the tubular member to be locked into place on insertion and rotation. Insertion of the tubular member opens a valve between the valve housing and the coupler member, permitting water from the pressurized water source to flow through the tubular member. O-rings are provided on the tubular member that engage the coupler prior to the opening of the valve, thereby preventing leakage around the tubular member. The valve housing and coupling are removably connected to each other, allowing easy access to the valve for periodic maintenance and alignment with the water source.
